- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2015This was the required text for a Sociology 1101 class. The content was both informative and engaging. The chapters are laid out in a foundational order; each page contains sidebars with highlighted terms and core concepts. The index is thorough, making it easy to find in the book whatever it is you might need.
You'll only get from a textbook what you're willing to put in, with regard to critical thinking and study skills, of course, and this book proved truly invaluable. I kept my copy after term, rather than selling it, and I still reference it regularly when writing papers or researching world topics.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2024I needed this new and I got a great deal on it
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2012I work at a community college in a department that loans textbooks to students who are low-income. Due to budget cuts, we were unable to buy as many textbooks for our library as we would like. This particular sociology text was in demand so I purchased it (out of my personal funds) to place in the lending library. Our lead sociology instructors select the best textbook to use in his or her class so this particular textbook is ideal for an introductory sociology course due to its layout and use of appropriate and highly engaging illustrations to keep a student's attention while it is being read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2014The book arrived when it said it would, and was in good condition. My only complaint would be that the cover had some strange dirty substance caked on it which was kind of gross, but other than that a great buy and worth the money.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2012The book is full of great information for someone studying sociology. However, my prof told me that new editions are pretty much the same as the last. Typically they just change the chapter order. If I had known this I would have saved myself about $50 buying the older 10th edition and would have the same information. There aren't going to be any huge changes in society every 9 months- buy the previous edition!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2012Of my three years in college I was able to get away with not having to pay for any books. The teachers pretty much did their jobs and I was able to pass their testes and classes. But finally that time has come where I get a teacher so utterly stupid and lazy that I am forced to by the book in order to have a chance at passing a test because god forbid a teacher teaches us something. And damn it, she tells us to buy a book that goes up to a hundred dollars. I'm already paying for your sallery why do I need to spend so much on a book I'm going to throw away after your class?
Anyways thankfully there are people who sell their copies that are falling apart so I can save a crap load of money.
I guess this book is alright. I'm sure every person who has ever bought it didn't want to in the first place.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2013My Sociology professor said we would be using the 12th edition of Society: The Basics in class, but she mentioned the 11th edition would be acceptable too. I decided to take her up on her offer and get the 11th edition and I haven't regretted it yet. Every time my professor mentions something in the textbook, I can find it in my older copy just a few pages away from the 12th edition. It takes a little bit more page-flipping, but the $100 I saved over my peers makes it well worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2021I loved this book as it was use for college and has minimal highlighting now but I loved itThe media could not be loaded.
