Very nice product for those who like carbonated drinks. All in, I'm not sure how much money you're actually saving (depends on where you live) compared to buying soda or carbonated water. However, its much more convenient, and more environmentally friendly. Its also a fun product to use, and I personally get some simple pleasure from fizzing up my water in the morning.
So the Source model is their new base model as of the 11/2012. It has this lock in mechanism versus prior models which require you to twist in your bottle, which is actually kind of nice. The lock-in system allows you to more easily snap in the bottle. Also, its a much nicer looking product in my view. The white one, which is what I purchased, has a style design similar to Apple products. Something that you can feel good sitting on your kitchen counter. The source also has a LED indicator that lets you know how much fizz to add to achieve various levels of carbonation. This is a little gimmicky but does look cool.
So far pretty happy with the product. I do wish their CO2 refill containers are cheaper. I believe a refill is 20 dollars at my local Bed Bath and Beyond. Yes they charge pretty high prices for re-fills and things like flavor units. This is no different from many companies that sell you the machine for little or no margin, and make it up on the accessories (ex: printers and ink cartriges, razors and blades, etc).

A Very Expensive Alternative to Soda

I have the Fizz model of this product and am very disappointed with my purchase. And it is not because of the gadget itself. The gadget works fine. It's the price of the syrup and the carbonator canister. The price of the syrup itself was already pretty high and now SodaStream has revamped their syrup by reducing the size of the product and repackaging it in a different shaped bottle to prevent users from noticing that the size has been reduced but the price has remained the same! In the photo that I have included, the serving amount per bottle went from 50 to 29. That is a marked reduction. You are paying the same for much less product.Further, if you look at the ingredients of the product, it contains Sucralose which is an artificial sweetener often used in diet sodas. SodaStream does not indicate on the packaging that this is in actuality a diet soda. I suspect that the reason for the use of Sucralose was to cut costs. Why do I say that? Because they did offer an all-sugar syrup at one point. That syrup was even much higher in price than their standard syrup. Given that I do not see any of the all-sugar syrups at the one store that actually sells their products anymore I suspect that SodaStream had to find a way to recoup some of the profit losses by charging more for their standard syrups.If you are looking for an economical substitute for the rising cost of soft drinks, SodaStream was not an option and is now even more of a non-option. You are better off looking at the sale ads of your local grocery stores where you can buy a 2-liter bottle for much, much less than what you would pay to make your own soda using this expansive route.Finally, if you love Coca-Cola or Pepsi, the taste difference is very noticeable. SodaStream naturally has a diet soda taste to it as it does contain Sucralose. I have not tried the all-sugar alternative of SodaStream syrup as the price was just simply outrageous. It would have cost more per serving than had I simply purchased a soda, at regular price at the grocery store.
