Editorial Reviews

Their classic 1968 debut. Emerging from London's UFO Club scene at the same time as Pink Floyd, The Soft Machine was a near perfect merging of psychedelic rock, jazz, pop and avant-garde stylings. Featuring the trio line-up of Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, and Mike Ratledge, this debut album was, as the original liner notes state, "the sound of music updated by the music of sound."

This must be one of Wyatt's top five albums, albeit number five. I never care about remixing and remastering: it's the music, the compositions that counts, right? This remaster proves me wrong, way wrong. Although I miss the presence of Hugh, this trio can expand your mind night after night, and it's a real jem with headphones (even buds sound great). Yup, this isn't Volume 2, but what is?
For people who have never heard early Soft Machine, well, this is really early! It's psychedelic, a bit jazzy, never repetitive (even DidItAgain), and the first time I heard it I thought it was odd and I wanted my money back. But the more I heard it, in many different situatiions, it popped suddenly, and moved my thoughts as to what music is, what purpose it can serve, where it can take me. No, this isn't the Beach Boys (well, maybe a bit Good Vibrations), this is not safe music, it experimental.
By Soft Machine 3, the boys had moved on, into a different direction, and Wyatt was probably packing his bags.
