"I have had many soil textbooks cross by desk over the years. The Plaster text continues to be my favorite. It is user friendly, marrying theory and practical knowledge into one text. It is one that both students and professionals can turn to again and again as a great soils resource."
"This text discusses basic soil science principles and includes many references to horticulture and landscaping, making it appropriate for students in urban areas where traditional agriculture is not the norm. It is very user-friendly, with an easy to read style and many figures and color pictures illustrating concepts. I have used the book in my soil class at a community college since it was first introduced by the author and have not found anything that comes close to being as useful as this text."

But the heart of the book, of course, is a look at what makes soil do its job, and that part of the book really helped fill in a lot of gaps in my education. I'm confident I'll make better choices in the garden now with this book's information under my belt. Yes, I would have preferred not to pay $180 for a used copy of a book, but none of the soil books geared to laymen that I've read so far have been worth their salt. So I guess a textbook is worth the higher price if it really delivers.
Although a great book, I traded it in because it is not good enough for everyday reference. It is set up for instruction not for reference. Also, the book contains many vaguely worded practice problems that were of zero help. Nevertheless, if you take a soil class and buy this book you will not be disappointed. Then, you can exclaim in a George C. Scott style voice, "Plaster, you Magnificent Professor, I Read your Book!"
