Derek Stafford needs an heir. His father has made it very clear that neither he nor his brother will inherit a dime unless they produce a male offspring, and Derek loves Stafford Manor and his lifestyle too much to take the threat of impoverishment lightly. He's determined to never marry again after watching his wife lose her sanity after stillbirth and miscarriage, to the point of her suicide. Raine seems to be the perfect solution.
I know, Derek sounds like a horrible cad. He isn't. There are many scenes with his point of view and the reader can see he is a man who, under the stress of loss, family pressure, and lust, makes a very bad decision. Derek realizes this too, and breaks off the deal with Raine, paying her the full amount and leaving her in peace so he can regain his sense of ethics aboard one of his shipping vessels. The only problem is that he has left Raine pregnant, and there is someone afoot with deadly intentions.
Sojourn With A Stranger has a slightly gothic air with ghosts, and witches of the tea-leaf reading, herbal-potion brewing kind. I loved how the paranormal aspects of the book were in keeping with the historical time period. The presence of bibles and laying-on-of-hands healing, the witchy midwife in the woods, the poltergeists of those wronged give the book that gothic touch I so loved. I really enjoyed the novel and found it difficult to put down.
Raine, along with her parents, were traveling on a boat routed to land in Norfolk when there was a terrible accident. Raine's parents were lost at sea. Now Raine has no where to go and nothing to live on. When she is sent to the Stafford Manor to seek employment, she is not expecting to be attracted to Derek the man of the house. Raine is drawn to Derek at first sight. She also finds herself unexpectedly looked after by a friendly spirit that seems to be watching out for her.
What will Derek lower himself to, to get the title to Strafford manor? What will Raine do to get the money to get home to her elderly grandfather? How will blossoming love result to feelings of hate? How will two characters who are meant to stand the test of time be able to be apart? These are just a few questions to ask yourself, while reading this great novel.
Sojourn with a Stranger is absolutely wonderful. I was captivated and submerged from beginning to end. This is not your typical love story, but none the less spellbinding. Derek is a man who is struggling to make a place for himself in a world where his family's name is his life's "golden ticket". Raine is a very strong willed and prideful young lady. These two characters blend together effortlessly while keeping with the normal love/hate relationship that they seem to share. You will be emerced in the pages of this great romantic & historical novel. Keta Diablo is a master when it comes to historical romance and has proven once again that she is a delightful storyteller that deserves to have all of her novels read.
