The second book in the Avengement Series, Solace, did something else entirely to me.
And even as I write these lines, the memories of reading the first lines the other day are so vivid, that new tears are forming in my eyes, and I was really upset with Caddy for putting me through the ringer:
“There is his husband, lying in the water, bleeding and gasping for breath. Brady, petrified and struggling to stay alive, tries to tell Tory something about a boat. Then his frightened eyes stare into Tory’s as he manages to say “I love you” one last time. He’s gone before Tory can even tell him the same.”
Excerpt From: Caddy Rowland. “Solace (The Avengement Series, #2).”.
Four sentences, and I felt my heart being ripped out of the rib cage, trampled upon, just for good measure, before tossed into the ocean off the Jersey shore… Yes, I am a gay man, and yes, I can relate to Tory’s emotions and to the loss he felt in this instant. Maybe, if I hadn’t read Stiletto first, if I hadn’t gotten to know Brady and the back story of their love affair, maybe, just maybe, I hadn’t reacted the same. For Christ’s sake, this is fiction, right? And here I was bawling my eyes out, telling Caddy just how miserable she’d made me feel.
I have good reason to: there’s the never-ending “gays need to die” theme, hate crimes, no happy ending for the gays and what not that surfaced. Yet make no mistake: Ms Rowland is no homophobe! Quite the contrary! I have a hunch Caddy probably knew she’d kill him off in the second book, as her approach to Brady was very cautious in the first book. We don’t get to know that much about him, but since Tory is a main character in the first novel, and since he’s a genuinely great person, we can assume that his husband is great, too. Anything else makes no difference. Which is where the second book differs from the first. We never get attached to Stu, and we can follow the story of Jasmine’s revenge without it ever becoming personal. We’re detached observers, marveling at her calculated action, her subterfuge and skill, and the book is action packed.
Solace is different in style. We learn much more about the relationship between Brady and Tory, their love, and without giving away the story, why Brady was eventually killed, making this one of the most difficult books I’ve read in a long time. Yes, I had to finish it, not just because of the review I promised to write, but also because of the need for closure.
Did I get it? Well, sort of. Thing is, and this is again a testament Ms Rowland’s amazing writing, that you have this foul taste in your mouth when you put down the book in the end, because while you get the impression that there’s been closure, and a measure of healing, I can’t shake the feeling that both Jasmine and Tory go through life like empty shells, forever robbed of the meaning it once held for them, and I still feel the pain of Brady’s untimely death. I’m just glad this is fiction and that I’ll be able to put this behind me when I read the next, hopefully more upbeat, novel.
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.
Holy crap! This book was both awesome and intense. From the very beginning, I was on the edge of my chair reading. Despite the fact that this mystery was not a difficult one to figure out, I still enjoyed the story a lot.
This book was the second in the series, but I do not feel that you needed to have read the first to understand the depth of love that the characters felt for each other, nor do you need to read book 1 in order to catch the gist of Jasmine's past.
Tory and Brady had the kind of love that was epic. It was beyond what most people find in their lifetime. I cried for Tory when Brady was lost to him. I could really feel his anguish. Rowland did an amazing job at not hurrying the timeline, without actually having much happen.
Tory and Jasmine have the type of friendship where they would do anything and everything for each other. For her, Tory was her lifeline when she needed it and in this story, their roles have now reversed. I really was struck by the love they shared, the trust, the loyalty. Tory's character was drowning in despair and even through it all, he was able to laugh at times, without losing his objective. He was able to look towards something. Jasmine's character was a strong, independent character who helped Tory, just as his character did in book 1.
With the awesome manner that these characters teased out the mystery behind Brady's murder, I can't see how this series will go on. However, with such pretty shoes that Jasmine owns, I love how they are not finished. I also really liked how book 1 was tied back in to 2, even though I read them out of order.
I can't wait for the next installment!
Tory and Brady are on vacation, a time to distress and enjoy life. When Brady decides to take a walk to town things change. Brady was brutally attacked and by the time Tory finds him, Brady dies in his arms. His last words to Tory was "Boat I". Those words haunt Tory's dreams and he wants to justice.
Tory calls on his long time close friend, Jasmine, to find who would do such a horrific crime. Once Tory and Jasmine start looking for clues they discover 2 other murders have happened, both gay. When lines are crossed
justice will be served, the key was time and patience.
I can not express how much I love this series ! I read this book from the first sentence to the last word in one sitting. Caddy writes so well that it plays like a movie on the big screen (what a great movie that would be!). Jasmine and Tory are such strong characters and I just love them ! ! ! Its for sure a Psychological Thriller at its best :)
