But after reading this book, you'll get a different idea about corsets: Wonder Woman! Seriously, these are personal stories from women wearing corsets. For them, the corset is often a piece of body armor, giving support and protection in both a physical and an emotional way. You will hear the stories of women who escaped major damage from auto accidents, or who recovered from spinal damage, by using a corset. You will also hear about how women have changed their self-image because now they stand tall and strong.
The "Wonder Woman" image is not just metaphorical. The actress playing Wonder Woman is wearing a battle-corset of sorts in the movie. Those were (and are) worn by men in the past, to protect their bodies and also to hold the weight of their weapons and and armor. Wrestlers and furniture movers wear belts that use the same principle. It makes the warrior look more awesome, but it also does the necessary work to protect the person.
I've been wearing these for a few years myself, and I can't believe the difference it makes in my body. I feel about 20 years younger just putting mine on and I can do a lot more physical labor. It is important to get one that fits correctly ... like shoes, fit is everything.
Read the book though. These are stories of strength and you will find comfort as you go through your own challenges, whether or not you ever use one yourself.
Besides the multitude of different needs and approaches to corsets one common thread came through: if you like corsets or want to try wearing them and you finally get your hands on a decent quality one with a nice fit it's amazing!
Some of the stories are truly fascinating. Because these are real life people's experiences with corsets it gives you a good idea of what it actually means to be wearing one. And it trashes a lot of pre-conceived opinions and unfounded myths about corsets.
As an amateur collector of people's stories, I appreciate the lengths the author had to go through to find themes and cohesion from messy real life.
