My favorite brand for Valerian root. I am a hard core insomniac and this knocks me out cold. Other brands of Valerian root give me a headache but this one has no side effects for me personally. I need this when I work night shifts. I take two capsules with water 60-75 minutes before bed. Do not drive or anything after you take it, because it makes you really spaced out.
Also, if you are kosher/halal/vegan, these are veggie caps made WITHOUT gelatin. This is very important to me because almost all Valerian root capsules are made with gelatin! So frustrating!
I have used more than a dozen brands of Valerian while searching for the best one. Organic is, of course, preferable to non-organic. Valerian is a "central nervous system calmative". It does NOT cause side effects in 99% of persons. The person leaving the side-effect review here is the first I have ever heard of. I have been "prescribing" Valerian for twenty years, to thousands of patients. Additionally, if it has "no effect" it simply means you are taking too few pills. The effective dose varies based on your tolerance and level of nervous system excitation. Always start with the lowest dose, and take when not planning to drive or travel. Slowly increase amount to desired effect. Valerian is NOT a 'sleeping pill'.
The Solaray Organic Valerian Root Extract is the best in its class... as far as I've found in a half dozen years of taking valerian root. A doctor, traditional pharmaceutical dispenser, told me, "It's one of the few natural things that actually does what they claim it does." We who know the value of natural herbs should understand that a traditional physician's approval of a product is rare and we celebrate it. If you live with stress and have trouble falling asleep, consider this non-addictive, no side (undesired) effect product.
I was taking this Valerian root every day for several months (I took it before work because I have a stressful job). I started getting bad headaches. I read that you are not supposed to take this stuff long term and that a side effect can be headaches. About a week after I stopped taking the Valerian, I stopped having bad headaches. I think this is okay to take occasionally if you have trouble sleeping, for which it works fairly well.
I really don't like giving one star reviews, but I have to be honest to let everyone know. I've only tried one other brand Valerian root and it was the Deva brand. Those weren't available, so I ordered these. These don't effect me at all for helping with sleep. I mean, not even a little. They still have the funky smell, but not quite as loud as the other brand. These were capsule instead of tablet, so perhaps that also has an effect on the effectiveness. Not sure, but I was disappointed. Glad these are veggie capsules and organic, but sad they weren't potent enough to work.
