The only downfall is that you see everything coming because it shares the view and thoughts of the antagonist right before it switches to what the protagonist is doing, giving everything away as to the events.
"Sole Witness" is a romantic suspense penned by first-time author, Jenn Black - who also wrote a regency novel as Janet Black that released on the same day (October 2012). For a first go, it really wasn't that bad; it was just that I kept thinking it could have been better if blah blah blah.
Basic premise? Lori is an almost-witness to a murder but the psychotic murderess doesn't realize she didn't see her, so she begins killing people in her quest to kill Lori. Meanwhile, the detective assigned to the case is Lori's first love (& lover) so there is the whole reunion thing going on, solving of past slights & hurts, etc... Throw in Lori's inability to move forward after her sister's death, phobias, a pregnant policewoman, a white-trash emotionally abusive mother, and it becomes a bit convoluted. We hear (constantly!) from the murderess and all the time in the back of my mind, I was thinking of the psycho killer from Eve Langlais' F. U. C. series -- and how her psychosis adds a bit of humor to the suspense. No humor in "Sole Witness".
I don't like panning new authors; but really, I would prefer to check in with this author once she has a few more books under her belt. The story was tedious.Read more ›
There were enough twists and the subplot involving the actual murderer was enough for me, but then throw in the relationship between Lori and Davy and how they both react to it sealed the deal.
I read this book in less than 2 hours. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
Jenn Black has done herself proud and I will be reading more of her writing. Great job!

when you read what Davy did you want to just yell at him and say Are you serious you don't know why she is that way to you!?!? Lori is a great friend but has been damaged by her past and this makes her less confident, more self aware of defects she thinks she has and indecisive.
Davy: The handsome and totally swoony detective who goes against family and is head over heals for Lori. He is confused by why she left although he doesn't have the right to question it after what he did. He is the knight in shining armour so to speak to a point.
Lori: the model who stops her career because of something from her past. She feels cursed and is full of self doubt. At one point you ask are you kidding me you question not having enough money and can't figure out not to use your credit card??? Hello. sometimes she is annoying with how she is to Davy(although she has good reason) but she does take it to far sometimes.
The killer itself is really nuts. You wonder how he/she survived all this time without being caught. Their moral compass is gone completely and you wonder how they were able to get the job she/he had without flags being raised.
The story with the twists in it is fun to read. How Lori keeps narrowly escaping and falls back with Davy is a intriguing story.
Lori Summers ran from a home of heartache and built herself up as a supermodel. Now, due to the grief of losing her sister, she is turning her back on her new life. She dreams of redefining herself, again. She has returned to Florida, but not to home. Her best friend Kimber has recently broken up with her long term beau and moved in with Lori. Davis "Davy" Hamilton has turned his back on his high-society family to do what he loves. As a cop, he wants to make a difference in the lives of those around him.
Amber Tompkins is bat sh*t crazy! She is an example of the egocentric psychotics found on the news every night. She has blamed Lori for all that is wrong in her life and she is setting out to get even.
Together Lori and Davis will explore the futures they want ... for her, for him, and for them, if they survive.
This book was a nice, easy read. It was an escape from reality, but not really. There are crazy people in the world. You never know what is going through their minds, but Ms. Black tries to give you a glimpse into the mind of one and I believe she has succeeded. When I finished, it took me a few minutes to remember where (and who) I was. Don't you love when a book transports you!?
Editing / Grammar: B. The grammar was perfect. A few editing errors were e-mailed directly to the publisher.
