Product Description

Catalan guitarist Jose Luis Monton (born in Barcelona in 1962) made a vital contribution to singer Amina Alaouis recording of Arco Iris and during the session producer Manfred Eicher determined that a Monton solo project would be highly appropriate for ECM. Thus this extraordinary disc, recorded in Lugano last year. Its a major artistic statement. With its program of Monton compositions drawing upon the melodic subtleties, rhythmic vitality and emotional power of flamenco, making connections also to classical tradition, it can at once take its place alongside the labels finest solo guitar albums.

I loved this CD. Jose Luis Monton is unique ans special in my opinion. I call this modern flamenco - the style where traditional flamenco beautifully combined with modern styles... Loved it.

jose Luis Monton was unknown to me, but my love for acoustic guitar triggered my curiosity. No disappointment here, because this discs delivers track after track.

A truly gifted artist, and "Highly Recommended"

I bought this as a gift for a friend who loves guitar and especially flamenco. The sound is classic and hauntingly beautiful. He loves it.

This is not Flamenco, it's Flamenco-inspired, Classical-style, solor guitar music. It's OK, however it is weakly played; a very Un-Flamenco quality. Perhaps because Sr. Monton is trying to minimize the audible nose breathing, that unfortunately is audible in a prior recording of his.

Overall, this is a decent album, which I would put into the "Medium-Easy Listening" category: Good for work, dinner party, driving, etc. At least, this style of so called "Modern Flamenco", (a term I despise) is way better than the "Flamenco-Lite", easy-listening-sappy musical stylings of Ottmar Liebert, Jesse Cook, and the like...Zzzzz!

If you want to explore "True Flamenco" music, check out: Sabicas (R.I.P), Paco De Lucia, Paco Pena, Pepe Habichuela, to name a few of the masters.

And if you want to experience "Flamenco-Piano" that is original, as well as directly translated from flamenco guitar listen to: Chano Dominguez. His music is also, jazz-inspired, but the flamenco pieces are true to form and rhythm.

Enjoy and be careful out there...BTW, no one gave me a free CD to write this review ;-)
