This is an exceptional book. I must admit that I felt extraordinarily fortunate to have stumbled across it, as I was searching for an image of the Cat's Eye Nebula for one of my projects (The Perception Dollar) and I contacted the author to let him know that I added a link to his website, and he graciously sent me a copy of his book. I love to read, and I have a huge stack of books to read, films to review, as I do a weekly radio show, and organize lots of events. I warned the author that I was just too busy to read it right away. The book is very hefty, and a third of it is footnotes, and another third appendices. I really didn't know what to expect, and picked it up one evening when I couldn't access my computer, and just started reading the first few pages which completely captivated me. If my life wasn't so demanding, I might have devoured the whole thing in a day or two. Before I even finished the book, I asked the author to be on my radio show. I believe his voice needs to be heard.
He weaves together many ideas, insights, wisdom, history, politics, psychology into a simple narrative of the relationships and conversations between four fascinating characters- two beautiful women, one an artist, the other an actress, and two men, one an accountant/playwright and the other an exceptional "avatar," enlightened fellow who forays into local politics, television, radio, and teaches yoga. I could relate to the characters- their dramas, challenges, transformations, growth, dreams, creative endeavors, as the years pass, and they mature, marry, raise children, attempt to apply what they know/realize to how they live/what they create.
The ending is a beginning, a challenge to those who seek to know and understand themselves, the world, the Universe, life, truth, and an invitation to share our journeys with the world. Although the narrative voice is strongly intellectual, it is a compelling case for the wisdom of the heart, to see that which connects and permeates all, which cannot be limited by mere words or descriptions. The book is a gift; sharing one's soul with the world.
