When critics in the 70's and 80's dismissed Solzhenitsyn for "not [being] the liberal we thought he was", it was because Solzhenitsyn was honest. Most people believe they are honest (myself included), but Solzhenitsyn actually was. Because of this honesty, he refused to drink the Kool-Aid -- not the Left's Marxist apologia, and not the Right's 'might makes right' argument.
That's one reason why Solzhenitsyn's writing is less well-known today. Reading this collection will help correct this minor injustice.
