Edward E. Ericson, Jr. (1939–2017) was Professor of English at Calvin College, where he taught for twenty-six years. He was the author of two books on Solzhenitsyn, editor of the one-volume authorized abridgment of Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago, and coeditor of The Solzhenitsyn Reader: New and Essential Writings, 1947–2005.

Paperback edition is beautiful, clear readable paper & print. Of course, I had to turn to his Harvard address. A decline in courage subsection says it all. How do you know a civilization is over? Watch for universal moral decline.
Is there hope. For starters, learn & listen to thinkers like Solzhenitsyn. Celebrate wonderful collections of such defining works of a lifetime. Like them, expect to pay in blood for hard learned lessons, or make way for those who do so.
This particular book should be universally owned by all who have the heritage to think & learn from the past so as not to repeat its mistakes. Wisdom in print, wow!
This work is especially important for the coming children & young adults of this world!

Many have intelligence, few have vision. Solzhenitsyn is one of the few who has both. He knows the truth and has dedicated most of his life to proclaiming it. Reading from this book reunited me with a friend whose voice I had not heard in years, and I found myself appreciating it more than ever. It is a little sad to realize you are part of a great civilization which is on it's way down the toilet, but it is so important to recognize it and not turn away from it and to not be pulled into the whirlpool of lies and deceipt and self indulgence which is rapidly destroying the west. Real Chistians, not the superficial phoney ones who shame the faith, need to recognize what is happening in the world today and, more than ever before, be a people apart, of the world but not part of the world. I give thanks to this great and noble man who fearlessly proclaimed the truth his whole life long, his works are a great help to those who would wish to follow a similar path.

Alexandr Solzhenitsyn is an intersting figure,a moral giant ,Shakespearean in his essence, equalled only by John PaulII and Nelson mandela among recent historical personage. Shamefully,disgustingly ignored by the left, exploited,shamelessly co-opted by the right,cafeteria style[much like JPII} he stradles above both camps,like Gulliver among Lilliputians. This collection, beautifully done considers the whole of the Canon,from stories written in the 1930's ending with his recent prose-poems[which are quite lovely and distinctive} A Large portion of the book are excerpts from THE RED WHEEL, his Magnum Opus,of which only the first two volumes[called Knots by the author] have been translated into English. The Red Wheel has been chewed and spit out by critics,though I cannot see why. It is in the great Russian literay tradition, long and varied and narrative and lovely. The overwhelming Chapter from the Gulag ArchipelagoII,THE ASCENT, is here, as are his major novels, speeches{the Nobel, Harvard and templeton adresses are here}.An essential volume to understand no just the 20th century, but the hole which exists in our post-postmodern world.

The Solzhenitsyn Reader was absolutely fantastic! I loved the seemingly more understandable translation. My Russian is a little rusty. Solzhenitsyn is undaunted to tell first hand the horrors of tyranny. In America in spite of mendacity of
current regime there is an astounding parallel to the days of Stalin, the era not as well known today. Solzhenitsyn stands as a witness to his times, he is one of my personal heroes. Although the Reader seems lengthy I was able to devour every word in 10 days.

I'm a newcomer to Solzhenitsyn's writings but after reading his One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich , I was anxious for more. This Reader provides just the sampling I desired. It is not only valuable from the literary aspect but also from the historical. I gained insight regarding the Bolshevik Revolution, especially the dehumanizing effect of the Soviet regime under Lenin and Stalin. The effect on Solzhenitsyn of imprisonment in the labor camps is truly remarkable and spiritually edifying.

How extraordinary that such an important book has yet to be reviewed on Amazon.co.uk. Sadly an indication of the lack of understanding of the work of this great Russian writer (surely a leading candidate for the most important writer of the twentieth century), this book contains many pieces of Solzhenitsyn's work that have yet to be translated into English, notably large sections from the penultimate and final Knots of his magnum opus 'The Red Wheel' but also excerpts from his much maligned and misunderstood study of the relationship between Russia and her Jewish population, 'Two Hundred Years Together'. Here's hoping that within the next few years these important works are at last translated in full into English but meanwhile we have Professors Ericson and Mahoney, supported by the Solzhenitsyn family, to thank for providing us with long excerpts from these great works and a great many other pieces not easily available elsewhere.
