Soma is on a mission to improve life for everyone who drinks water, with sustainable, plant-based filters that make water healthy and delicious, beautiful carafes and pitchers, and the convenient Filters by Mail service.
The Soma Pitcher is made of shatter-proof, BPA-free plastic. Designed to look stunning on your table and fit perfectly in your fridge, the pitcher holds 10-cups (80 oz) of crisp, refreshing filtered water.
Easy-to-fill and featuring Soma’s unique filter made of coconut shell carbon and plant-based casing that removes chlorine and improves taste. And for every Soma filter purchased, clean drinking water is donated to people in need through Soma’s nonprofit partner, charity: water. Raise your glass with the Soma water filter.
From the Manufacturer
We believe clean drinking water is a basic human right. That’s why we’re a proud sponsor of charity: water and partner with them in their mission to bring safe drinking water to over 750 million people without access to it. Every time you buy a Soma filter, we donate to charity: water projects. These contributions go directly to sustainable, community-owned water projects in developing countries.
We want our customers to feel good about their water, so we strive to find ways to not only create more sustainable business practices, but to find solutions to the global water crisis. As a certified B-corporation, impact is a critical part of Soma's DNA. We infuse it into everything we do, from our product design and supply chain to our company culture and partnerships.
Every detail of the Soma Pitcher has been thoughtfully designed, from the easy to grasp white oak handle to its fridge-friendly size.
The Soma filter features coconut shell carbon and a plant-based casing so you can feel good about your water. Each filter is effective for 40 gallons, or about two months.
The Water Quality Association has tested and certified the Soma filter to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 requirements for the reduction of chlorine, taste and odor.
Because polluting water while manufacturing products that enhance water wouldn’t make any sense at all.
Describe your product in 3 words.
Smart. Beautiful. Sustainable.
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
One night during a dinner party, our founder, Mike del Ponte was hesitant to put his cheap plastic “other brand” water filter on his nicely set table. Mike decided to pour his filtered water into a glass wine decanter. Unfortunately (or fortunately) as he did, the lid of the water pitcher fell off, causing water to gush all over the kitchen floor. As he cleaned up the mess, he thought, “Why can’t someone create a water filter that’s beautifully designed, easy to use, and made of sustainable materials?” Soma was born. The rest is water under the bridge.
What makes your product special?
Soma is the only water filter with 100% plant-based filtration. Distinguished by its clean, modern design, Soma also gives back by donating clean drinking water to those in need through charity: water.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
The most difficult part of designing the Soma Pitcher was finding the perfect wooden handle. We needed something that is both beautiful and durable, so oak as a wood species was always at the top of our list. The challenge was finding a wood supplier in the U.S. committed to sustainable practices and detailed craftsmanship. Fortunately, we found the perfect partner in Southern Oregon.

It looks great, and the way the lid is designed is so cool - it's made so that you just put the pitcher directly under running faucet, and the lid is created to drop under the pressure of the water for the water to enter. Once it's full the lid will simply float up so that you know it's time to turn off the faucet. Occasionally the lid seems to stick a bit but it's easy enough to just lightly tap down.
I also love being able to order the pitcher and more importantly subsequent filters here on Amazon. It's actually a slightly better deal (for now at least) than on the pitcher's own site.
The sustainability (the filter is plant-based - very cool!) and charitable practices also appeal to me.
However I have read the reviews pertaining to the technology of the filter being quite bad. Apparently it filters out little more than chlorine and leaves in the metals and other impurities that come up in tap water (I live in Los Angeles which is known to have exceptionally impure tap water). How crucial it is for me to have that much filtered out, I'm not sure as of yet. But a pitcher that doesn't filter lead out of tap water...seems pretty bad.
Some reviews have said the water tastes like "dirt." I've never thought this at all, the water tastes clean to me. I'm not totally insensitive to some bottled waters tasting worse than others - I'll never pay money for Dasani or Aquafina as I feel they taste weird and metallic - but I guess I'm much less sensitive than those reviewers who are so insistent that water from the Soma pitcher tastes terrible, because it seems fine to me.
I've also seen reviewers say that there were little charcoal bits in their water. With the Soma I've not once seen any bits from the filter in my water. I was used to seeing the bits constantly when I had a Brita.
Three stars because I'm pretty disappointed to learn about the filter not being that effective on anything other than chlorine. For this price that doesn't seem fair. However I'll admit that because the water doesn't actually taste bad and because I like the design and sustainability of the materials so much, I'm keeping the pitcher, at least for now. Hopefully down the road they might design the filter to work on more than just chlorine.
The weight(?) balance does not seem to work so the cap does not close, stays dropped into the top tank. The rest of the pitcher looks great, attractive design to have out on the table. I like the "green" concept. Seems like good quality (plastic) but I need a cover replacement I have some reservations. Not finding contact information anywhere. Need help. Thank you.
Original review: Visually incredible. Very intuitive design with regards to filling (the top opens with water flow and automatically closes). Sturdy handle and well-designed throughout. Water tastes normal. Con: can be easy to spill when pouring from a full pitcher. Overall great purchase, probably won't upgrade the filter as often as recommended, but I love how it looks and works.
