Product Description

Patrick Dempsey (Can’t Buy Me Love) and Jennifer Connelly (Career Opportunities) star in this enchanting and unpredictable comedy about sexual manners and romance. When Michael (Dempsey) arrives in Quebec to spend Christmas with his girlfriend Gabriella (Connelly), she greets him with startling news—“I don’t love you anymore.” But for poor Michael that’s just the beginning of his woes, as he finds he’s about to spend the holidays with a most bizarre family. Along with Gabriella’s two eager sisters who crawl in and out of his bed, there’s her doting mother and brilliant father who writes books in the buff. And let’s not forget Gabi’s Granny who insists that Michael is her dead husband. The outlandish meets the ordinary in Some Girls, serving up plenty of fun with more than a dash of farce, fantasy and originality! The delightful international cast includes Sheila Kelley (Breaking In), Lila Kedrova (Zorba the Greek), Florinda Bolkan (Flavia the Heretic), Ashley Greenfield (One Fine Day) and André Gregory (My Dinner with André). Directed by Michael Hoffman (Soapdish) and produced by Robert Redford (A Civil Action).

This is a very lush and layered movie, and it can easily take multiple viewings to unpack. I think it suffers a bit that it is in the 'Coming of Age/Teen Comedy' genre along with puerile popcorn flicks like American Pie. It is not the usual coming of age fare, and anyone watching this movie for a simple plot, relatable characters, easy answers, and sex jokes are going to be confused at the least.

We follow a very young and affable Patrick Dempsey (Michael) into the insular world of the D'Arc family, who he quickly realizes are extremely wealthy and delightfully eccentric. It must be said one of the main characters (and gems) of the film is the house itself, with it's gorgeous Art Nouveau interiors. Dempsey's only ally in this "lions den" is Nick, the oldest daughters boyfriend/family handyman. But, surrounded by beautiful women, mysterious family dynamics, intriguing personality quirks, and the snow covered wonderland of old town Quebec City he isn't looking for the exit. He goes to Quebec for the holidays primarily to visit his girlfriend, but is quickly drawn into the family crisis of a sick grandmother, where the magic really begins for Michael and the viewer.

Keep a look out for the recurring theme of the Three Graces, which is clearly the girlfriend and her sisters. It also provides a lens through which they should be viewed, and helps to make sense of their fickleness. The opening scene has Dempsey waiting at the airport to be picked up (late) by Connelly, while a very large picture of Botticelli's Three Graces goes up (advertising a museum exhibition). Note that the sisters all wear identical diaphanous goddess-like nightgowns, and constantly entice and reject Dempsey's character of Michael. There is also a statue of the Three Graces next to his bed in the spare room where he sleeps.

So, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I could watch it with the sound off just for the visuals. I did a fair bit of googling, and found some information on the film. Although a lot of highly recognizable footage is of Quebec City (dominated by the Chateau Frontenac on top of the hill), and the Old Town that surrounds it, the rest of the movie was shot in Montreal, including the house. Using my finely honed google maps skills and a still shot of the film (where they are waving goodbye), I found the house used for the exterior shots. Unsurprisingly, it is in a famous Montreal neighborhood filled with historic mansions called The Golden Square Mile. The address is 1245 Redpath Crescent Montreal, QC H3G 1A1. You can look it up on street view. There are also real estate listings for the property, and the interiors are a bright white remodeled Edwardian, not luxurious art nouveau. Using one property for exteriors and shooting on a set for interiors is very common. I have to assume (sadly) the interiors were a set since I have never found evidence to the contrary.

The cemetery is Mt Royal Cemetery, walking distance from Redpath Circle, which is at the foot of Mt Royal.

As others have mentioned, the movie focuses on a quirky family and a those surrounding the family. It is not for everyone's tastes. If you go into it thinking of it as an art house or independent film, this will temper your expectations. It is a light piece of entertainment and an easy way to spend an hour and forty minutes. Each of the characters is interesting, and it's fun to watch their journey and the impact Patrick Dempsey's character, Michael, has on each of the family members over a Christmas holiday. I expect most viewers seeking out this film will be a fan of Patrick Dempsey, Jennifer Connelly or Sheila Kelly. None of their performances disappoint.

As for the blu-ray itself, minimal cleanup has been done to the film. There is still speckling still present during the whole film. As for the clarity, the blu-ray is definitely an improvement over the VHS release. As for edits to the film, I would be remiss in not mentioning Patrick Dempsey's full frontal nude scene has been removed from this release. During that specific scene on this blu-ray, there is a visible scrolling of the film frame, so you will see nothing. It's a little puzzling, as everyone else's nude scenes are still intact for this release. If you are a completest and had this film on VHS, you can't get rid of it yet. If you don't mind your movies edited, this is the one to get. As for extras, there is informative commentary provided by the director, Michael Hoffman. Interestingly, Hoffman doesn't address the film edit for this release. There is also a 9 minute short of Hoffman talking about the background of getting this film made and Robert Redford's minimal involvement as executive producer. There are trailers included for Career Opportunities, The Hot Spot, Breaking In, Gotcha!, The Allnighter, and Date with an Angel.

Watched this for the first time when it was released. Loved it then. It made me wish my family was as close as the people in this movie were.

This movie has no merit. There’s a lot of tension between the male lead and the three sisters and the mother. The relationships between the characters are forced, especially Patrick Dempsey, with the grandmother. The storyline is choppy. Don’t bother watching.

I like this movie. It's not about anything but an American bourgeois boy hanging with his girlfriend's bohemian family up in Montreal. He's offended, surprised, angry, but always surprised and ultimately accepting and enriched by the weirdness.

As am I. It's just charming and good-willed, fun.

This is a great film, starring a pre-handsome Patrick Dempsey visiting his girlfriend’s eccentric family. Funny in parts, but not really a comedy. Quirky and wonderful.

A delightful film about a college student invited by his girlfriend to spend Christmas break with her and meet her family. Anticipating a week of sex and fun, he is unprepared to be told she is no longer in love with him and to be confronted with a family so bizarre they make the Munsters look almost normal. Filmed in wintertime Quebec, the scenery, from the huge old mansion on the city's edge where the family lives to the countryside, is enticing and beautifully photographed. Often very funny, the movie is mostly subtly amusing; its director has a great sense of comic timing and is adept at creating a bittersweet atmosphere for Dempsey's scenes with the incomparable Lily Kedrova. Dempsey is terrific throughout as
the dazed and confused young man, constantly titillated but unsatisfied by the mixed messages from the three sisters. For those who care, there is much nudity and discussion about sex (but little actual sex).
