From Library Journal

A baby is the last thing hard-driving journalist Matt Winters needs. But when he finds one outside his San Francisco apartment door late one night and it turns out to belong to the sister he hasn't seen since she was nine, he knows he can't just abandon the baby. He also knows that he has to find his sister. But he needs help, which comes in the reluctant form of bridal shop owner Caitlyn Devereaux, his neighbor and a woman with sorrows of her own. Although the relationship between Caitlyn and Matt is primary, a secondary love story adds a satisfying touch to a well-written, emotionally involving romance that combines a realistic urban setting with a family-oriented plot and makes it work. An expert at creating appealing characters, Freethy is a RITA Award-winning writer of heartwarming, family-centered contemporary romances; she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Caitlyn has a past she'd rather forget. Matt is looking for his past. The two live across the hall from each other but have never met. That is, until one night a baby is left in the hallway, on Matt's side, and he goes across the hall to Caitlyn for help. Together the two take care of the baby and fight the pain of each of their past.
This was a good novel. The characters were likable and well developed. They could be people we all know in real life. They each grow throughout the story and grow together as neighbors and friends. The storyline in this book seemed to be well thought out. It moved at a fairly decent pace.
There are a lot of events that happen over the one week course of this story. All in all this was a good book. I found myself reading as fast as I could because I couldn't wait to find out what happened. I would like to see a follow-up book to this story. Maybe one more in-depth with Sarah and Reverend Johnathan.

I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I read it twice in two weeks. This was my first B. Freethy book, and will certainly not be my last. I am very curious about her other novels. The book is not too steamy by current standards, but thank heaven for that, because she actually crafts a very good story, and allows the reader to understand the characters. It is high on emotion, and I found myself falling in love with the hero and heroine. excellent book. very unlike other novels where a boatload of bedroom scenes surrounds a skeleton of a "plot" (ie. Shannon Mckenna)

Barbara Freethy is a good writer. Both the heroine and hero are likeable, believable characters who go through self-discovery processes as they fall in love with each other. They become better people able to gain perspective and make commitments because of what they go through together. The author showed some strength in developing the book the way she did as well. While it's clearly a romance novel, it isn't totally a fairy tale.

Let me tell you.....I found Barbara Freethy by accident.....don't remember exactly how, but what a writer she is...I have now listed all her books in my memo pad, and as I read each one, on my 4th one now, I cross it out and put the date I bought it!
When I reach the end, what will I do???

This is a good, solid contemporary romance by Barbara Freethy. All the usual elements are there - a sexy but stoic hero and beautiful but vulnerable heroine are thrown into an emotionally charged situation. Here, the catalyst is a baby that appears in the hallway between their neighboring apartments. As they struggle to care for the baby and find its mother, the two strangers rapidly become enmeshed in one anothers' lives. Freethy does a good job of making the scenario work, and the book is a pleasant and quick read. My only reservation is that the sexual tension was a bit forced and too formulistic.

I actually enjoyed this book for the most part...particularly the primary storyline. If I was rating on the Matt/Caitlyn story, I would give it 5 stars, no question. Well written, likeable characters, sexy, etc. However, when I got to judging the book as a whole, mainly the last couple chapters, the rating went down. I guess your final opinion is the taste left in your mouth when it's all said and done, and I didn't like that final taste.

There is a secondary storyline involving Matt's sister meeting someone and a third storyline involving the relationship/history between Matt, his sister, and his mom. These aspects of the book were not enjoyable to me. I will try not to give away spoilers, but I found the relationship involving Sarah to be very unrealistic and off-putting. I felt uncomfortable watching the couple develop, and I just didn't buy into it.

The story involving Sarah, Matt, and the mom was even more distracting. I don't like how it ended at all, and I felt like it was sort of a cop-out. I feel like this part of the story was forced...like the author was trying to put some drama or depth into the book when it should have just been a nice, light beach read.

I honestly don't know how the author should have ended it (or added a conflict element) better than what she did, but while I liked the premise of the book and enjoyed it nearly all the way to the end, I just reeeally didn't like the resolution to all of the stories, especially Sarah's story and the mom thing. For about 85-90% of the book, I would have definitely recommended it, but the last chapter or two blew it, IMO.

I found Ms Freethy quite by accident and I'm so happy I did! This is a delightful read! If you're feeling a little low; read this book. Her characters are very real and believable; the romance is just the right touch without being too over the top; and there is an element of mystery as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will go on to read her other books. I noticed her customer reviews are 4 and 5 star rated. (FYI, "Daniel's Gift" is not light reading, but very worthwhile--different from Ms. Freethy's usual.)
