This book is one of our children's favourites. Unfortunately, it is long out of print, but thanks to some great used book resellers and places like Amazon -- it is still available today. Distinctively illustrated by Eric Gurney -- who did other outstanding titles such as "The Diggingest Dog", this book addresses a unique topic for young children: A lunar eclipse. Fun, smart and quite enjoyable. I only wish it would be back in print! I never understand stuff like this...

Charming book with amusing illustrations. Lovely way to introduce children to the drama and magic of an eclipse of the sun. Animals' reactions are portrayed in lively fashion. As sun reappears, all fears allayed!

This book is great for teachers at all levels. It nicely teaches the concepts of solar eclispe. It can also be used to teach literary concepts like alliteration and onomatopoeia. I made a sun & phases of the moon to show the eclispe while I read the story. Then, I just turn the sun 180 degrees & take off the moon pieces and the sun "reappears" for the kids. Enjoy this book!

A modern-day chicken-little story,of the hen who thought someone was eating the sun. A funny and well written book that teaches children about the solar eclipse, and the value of not gossiping. This has long been my favorite children's story, and the colorful pictures only make it better.I highly recomend this book for children of all ages and for the young at heart.

This was my elder son's favorite book. In later year's it was a hit with the preschoolers I taught as well. The colors are vivid, the language engaging, and the story riveting to young children. It's not just a silly chicken wondering why the sky is falling, but a whole passel of silly barnyard friends experiencing an eclipse. Our copy disappeared, and years later we were unsuccessful at locating one locally or through our library system. My grandson, 2 1/2, is now enjoying his copy much to our delight.

This was a favorite story for my kids when it first came out in the 70's. I wanted to give it as a gift and was delighted to get a gently used copy. It is a great read to elementary classes plus a science lesson.

It's a story about the eclipse of the sun but also about how understanding and knowledge can allay fear. I used to read this to my daughter.I bought it so she could read it to my grandson & he loves it as much as she did. If you buy it remember each animal needs to have his or her own voice. We always gave the turtle a (very bad) John Wayne voice.

I was happy to find the book which I read for my children when they were 3 to 4 years old. The nice story tells how confused animals where when the sun started to shrink in the middle of day and how happy they game when the eclipse was over and sunlight was back again. It's now the favorite story of my grandchildren. The used book arrived in good condition with and the shipment delighted me with a kind personalized greeting.
