Two parallel stories here. One from the past in which a young teenage woman dies in childbirth whispering the child’s name Sharon and Jake, the child’s father? In the present we find 17-year-old Colin and his Rottweiler Buck whose dreams are haunted by a voice screaming Jake and his waking life by visions of another time and place while he tries to cope with the fallout from the day he slashed his left wrist, an event noone will let him forget.
The story is set in the city of Leavenworth, a place imfamous for the nearby Federal Prison of the same name. Eventually we learn that being sexually molested by his his father’s best friend Gene was cause of Colin’s suicide attempt. A good part of his problem is the fact that he has never come clean about the crime, not even to his best friend Jeff. His mixed feelings lead him to alienate his on again off again relationship with girlfriend Kendra.
A whiff of pipe smoke causes a flashback that leads him to tell Kendra a prolonged description of sexual molestation, including being made drunk and drugged to make him compliant. The perpetrator has since died of cancer.
Reminds me of the scandal that was Cornwall Ontario where a ring of sexual predators included judges, lawyers, the mayor, priests, probation officers, police preying on juvenile delinquents who had no one to turn to.
