Someone to Talk to - Finding Peace, Purpose, and Joy After Tragedy and Loss: A Recipe for Healing Paperback – March 30, 2011
|New from||Used from|
"It engaged me from the first page and kept me spellbound, and I hated to put it down until I reached its surprise happy ending. . . [A] significant contribution to the field." --S. J. Orenstein, LICSW, ACSW, NASW-MA Focus
From the Author
Although it has a happy ending, the book begins at the darkest time of my life. I felt driven to write it, pushing through and re-living my painful memories, because I wanted to share what I had learned from my experiences. To do otherwise would have been wasting the pain.
What I had learned was this: not only can we survive what we think will destroy us, but we can grow and deepen and achieve great joy despite - even because of - our losses. Looking back over my journey from Wanting-to-be-Dead to Grateful-to-be-Alive, I saw the route I had carved out and realized it could serve as a map, or a guide, for someone coming along behind me through their darkest time.
I hope that people who struggle with loss or trauma will find inspiration here, knowing how someone else also suffered, and came out the other side, For devotees of memoir and seekers of inspiration, I hope it shines a light on the wonderful possibilities in life, no matter how bleak it can sometimes seem.
Tragedy can reshape us, and we can discover that we're more resilient than we ever imagined.

This book is compelling. I found it hard to put down. It is well written and helps the reader reflect on personal losses and healing. Samantha M. White has a great sense of humor, a way with words, and the ability to share intimately from her life experiences.
I highly recommend this book.
This remarkable true story chronicles how one woman dealt with multiple and cumulative losses as a wife, mother and friend, and was able to use her traumatic experiences to pave a pathway to more joy than she ever dreamed of. PLEASE IF YOU ARE A THERAPIST, MOTHER, DAUGHTER OR SOMEONE WHO IS FEELING DOWN FOR ANY REASON, READ THIS BOOK. YOU WILL THANK ME FOR RECOMMENDING IT AND MORE IMPORTANTLY YOU WILL THANK the author for sharing with us her moving story of emotional collapse and subsequent healing, and the clinical and self-interventions that brought her to a more rewarding life, what she calls "healing beyond healing."
A fascinating read for clinicians, researchers, and therapists, and a healing tool for clients dealing with issues of loss.
I'm so glad you hung in there, Ms. White, to find joy, happiness, and peace.
It turns out that this skillful author's style has meaningful purpose: as White reveals, people can overcome tragedy by following her "recipe." What's more, as White demonstrates and documents, it is possible and important to move from heartbreaking sorrow to a life filled with purpose and happiness.
White is an immediately companionable presence. Her story is deeply felt and highly captivating. Truly, this is a book that you won't want to put down, and in the best way, leaves you longing for more.
you through tough times to find meaning for your life.
