If I like Somersaults so much, why just 3 stars? If you look at the ingredients it seems odd that a high sodium snack has salt as its last ingredient. In fact, modified food starch comes before salt. Where is the rest of the sodium coming from? Look closely at the "seasonings." In parentheses the seasonings used in the snack are listed in order of abundance. The very first "seasoning" is "spices" and the second seasoning is "yeast extract." Yeast extract is an analog for MSG (processed free glutamic acid). In short, the sodium is mostly coming from a form of MSG. Please be careful eating these if you are sensitive to MSG.
So what do we have here? A tasty snack that contains too much sodium and has a flavor enhancer derived from a form of MSG. I still really really like these snacks and I will continue to buy them, but with so much sodium and the use of yeast extract I can't rate these any higher. Note that this company is not by any means alone is labeling something as "all natural" while using a form of MSG.
Personally I like things like salt & pepper pistachios better, but they are more work and less filling. Salt & vinegar Cape Cod chips are also delicious, but push me even closer to looking like Homer Simpson. These Somersaults are a great alternative.
We're going to check out some of the other flavors next.
For those of you with kids with peanut or tree nut allergies, Somersaults uses SEEDS and not nuts in their ingredients and last I checked, they manufacture their snacks on a peanut / tree nut free line so these portable, packaged snacks are a GREAT option for those who face these food allergies. Some of the flavors do contain milk powders so those with dairy allergies should avoid this line of snacks.
The only 2 negatives are the price point - they are a bit on the expensive side but then if you compare the ingredient list with a bag of doritos, you'll understand why. You get what you pay for...Somersaults absolutely have more nutritional benefit than a bag of chips or crackers. My second 'complaint' if you will is that they are not currently using organic ingredients. With GMO foods so prevalent in our food supply (more so than most other progressive nation), some of us make a point to really try to feed our families non -GMO foods if we can't always do organic. However, I make the exception with Somersaults because I have a child with anaphylactic peanut and severe tree nut allergies and Somersaults are a safe snack for him so in our case, safety trumps non organic every time :-).Read more ›
