Editorial Reviews

The graphic design of the album artwork, which expertly mixes imaginative photographs of Kreayshawn with colorful illustrations, shows Kreayshawn being pulled into an alternate spacey, fantasy world. "I wanted an album cover that would really help to represent me and who I am," notes Kreayshawn, explaining how she came up with the design ideas. "Something that, when people first see it, they'll say, 'Only Kreayshawn could think of a cover like that.' Kreayshawn's colorful video for "Go Hard" the official first single from Somethin' 'Bout Kreay, received over a million views in less than 5 days. "Go Hard" gained praise from fans and media alike, with the Huffington Post stating, "channeling bubble pop greats like Gwen Stefani and Katy Perry, 'Go Hard' is undeniably catchy," and Gawker calling the track "hotter than anything Kreay has put out since 'Gucci Gucci." to date the video for "Gucci Gucci" has garnered over 36 million views.

Kreayshawn became an internet sensation in the summer of 2011 with her hit song "Gucci Gucci" and has since been known perhaps for her controversies than for her music. The rare white female rapper will typically be known as a novelty act (anyone remember Sarai??) even if she is able to deliver strong beats, witty raps, and clever hooks. Lady Sovereign is one exception.

And several songs do deliver. "Go Hard" and "K234ys0nixz" (pronounced "Kreay-sonic" as if it really makes a difference) are two examples of this. But there are a number of wretched tracks too, such as "Luv Haus" which closes the album on a poor note. Bottom line, this album was released way too late, and it only sold 3900 copies in its first week, and it contains far too little interesting material for the mainstream listener. Unlike Lady Sovereign, the only white female rapper who has not completely faded from public consciousness after one song or album, Kreayshawn just does not deliver enough good stuff here to be taken seriously. 2.5 stars.

Kreay doesn't get the credit she deserves. Her songs are just FUN! truthfully, she's the only female rapper i actually like. also, i appreciate the fact that she doesnt use the n-word in her songs. i'm a black girl myself, so yeah! i love Kreayshawn and I really hope she comes out with another album some day.

Kreay Kreay is where it's at. I have no idea WHY she is not as, or more popular than Little Debble, and Jody Highroller, (although I'm a BIG fan of all three plus V-Nasty). Really digging the Oakland/Bay Area Sound. I usually NEVER purchase CD's, but this is definitely worth it.

This is a great album, it's totally fun and funny, and kinda bad-ass in a snotty white kid kind of way. It's got a bunch of catchy songs, and it holds up to many repeat listenings. It totally reminds me of Licensed to Ill, the first album by the Beastie Boys. Sure, it's not perfect, there's a few dud songs, and she's far from the greatest rapper ever, but so what? Beastie boys weren't great rappers either, not by a long shot. And it's got that same great punk DIY energy. I totally don't get why critics rip on kreayshawn so much -- we need more this kind of punk-rock energy, kids who are totally doing their own thing, and having fun with it.

The most disappointing thing about this album for me was the fact that it only has 13 tracks on it, and 3 of them have already been released. I think she could have come up with more tracks, especially more with her rapping. Luv Haus and BFF really are awful tracks, they remind me of that Nicki Manaj crap and I thought Kreay was above all that. My top tracks have to be Go Hard, Left Ey3, and Gucci Gucci respectively. The Ruler is an okay track as is Blasé Blasé and Ch00k Ch00k, but they aren't songs I particularly enjoy. The rest of the tracks are hit or miss, either you'll like them or hate them. I personally dislike them. Overall it's not a stunner and I think she could have done better. But I really am obsessed with Left Ey3, I think it's reminiscent of a Three Six Mafia or even Young Jeezy style song.

Yes, the album is probably not perfect in any possible way, but that also shouldn't be it. It's funny, it's cool and it's Kreay. That's the most important fact. You can feel her personality on the record and in terms of the short time to produce it's really succesful. It has some amazing tracks and if you like her style, you will LOVE it. I LOVE IT!

I kinda feel bad for Kreashawn because the record bombed due to the label dropping the ball. It only came out on CD a year too late and only in the US at Hot Topic stores, and NOBODY shops at Hot Topic for music!! Otherwise, MP3 download or an import CD which doesn't count towards US sales. This record was not in people's sight because of this...many didn't think she even had a record out!! No BestBuy, Target, Walmart, indie stores, nothing, so no sales above 3900 copies???? Pathetic.

In spite of this, the record is a fun listen, good party music if you can take a filthy mouth...hell, under the CD tray is a pic of Kray flipping the bird!! Funny to some, offensive to others...I thought it was cute. The cover is a good indication of the music inside...cartoonish, colourful, and collegiate/hipster. It's like Nicki Minaj-esque bubblegum/hiphop hybrid pop, partly rapped, partly sung, but merged with a smart-aleck college chick who thinks she's cooler than she really is, YET she is better than you would think. Also, remember girl college rap/female Beastie Boys Northern State?? Reminds me of them.

She talks a lot about drugs, violence, typical hiphop stuff, but with her own twist, and she's probably just bragging and is none of that stuff, so it's all just fantasy, and is probably boring & normal at home...not that that's bad, but people fantasize...and it doesn't hurt that the songs are really catchy, in the vein of Nicki. And still, the 2011 viral hit "Gucci Gucci" is still fun, and somehow the volume level is higher on that song than the rest of the album, weird. Other fun tunes are the new single "Go Hard (La La La)", "Luv Haus" is a catchy tune as well, why people hate on that is strange...I dig it...opener "Blase Blase" is fun and has a unique musical bed.
