Editorial Reviews

Review

"Despite all the intricacies and scientifically accurate details, the real reason we like Troll's work is that it's just doggone fun to look at."
--"Fairbanks Daily News Miner"

"Like the ratfish, Troll's art goes deep and attests to prehistoric times. Also like the fish, the art at times links the distant past with an unlikely contemporary descendant. For the artist, past is not only prelude, it is an ironic reference point for citing pop culture and the American way of life or presenting original inhabitants of a landscape no longer submerged beneath Paleozoic waters: extinct fish swim circles around television sets; ancient marine arthropods cohort with Elvis Presley; plesiosaurs-- those gargantuan sea reptiles from dinosaur times--sail through skies above the wheat-covered fields of Kansas."
--"Eddies" magazine (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service).

Ray Troll, born in upstate New York, but now residing in Ketchikan, Alaska, has been making bad puns and great t-shirts for thirty years. The themes of the t-shirts are the puns, and for some reason, people like to wear shirts that say "Truth is Stranger than Fishin," or "The Baitful Dead." The popularity of Troll's t-shirts escapes me - would you wear a shirt that said, "The DaVinci Cod" with a picture of the Mona Lisa holding a codfish? - but apparently millions of people buy these things and wear them proudly. In case you're not a bad-pun-good-drawing t-shirt kind of person, you will appreciate the wisdom of collecting Troll's worst puns and best drawings into a book. Of course he had to call it "Something Fishy This Way Comes," and the cover illustration shows a wide-eyed, frightened man in bed, as giant rockfish, salmon, and halibut hover over him. In case it went over (or under) your head, "Something Fishy This Way Comes," is Trolls' ichthyological twist on Shakespeare's "By the pricking of my thumbs, Something wicked this way comes," which is what the second witch says as Macbeth approaches. Ray Bradbury also used "Something Wicked This Way Comes" as the title of a novel. I guess that puts Ray Troll in pretty good literary company, but he stands alone as a purveyor of twisted language accompanied by wonderful drawings. "The Archfishop" shows a salmon in full ecclesiastical regalia, surrounded by angelfish, cardinal fish, and holy mackerel; while "Embrace Your Inner Fish" portrays Chales Darwin tenderly holding an early tetrapod. If you can get past the puns without groaning, "Something Fishy This Way Comes" is a wonderful lesson in fish-drawing 101. Even though his work is funny, Troll is not a cartoonist, but rather an accomplished ichthyological illustrator.Read more ›

It would seem that Ray Troll and I are warped in the same direction! The artwork, and puns are a fine source of amusement for some of us, and elicit a shake of the head from others - and I am definitely in the first group. What can I say - I like fish.

My husband has one of the artists T-shirts from the 80,s. He wanted a new one of the same design but those are not made anymore and the "vintage" ones are really expensive. I gave him this so he could just gaze at the pictures every once in a while!

King of the Pacific Northwest t-shirt, Troll has created a terrific collection! Some are real laugh-out-loud images and all are beautifully reproduced. The book makes it possible to see the amazing detail in Troll's drawing. So many are familiar but there are some super rare ones too, and what a great chance to recapture the t-shirts that were worn threadbare and have gone on to wash cars.

RayTroll is a wonderful, creative, imaginative artist with a great sense of humor and a deep and detailed knowledge of fishes. Full disclosure: I also consider him a friend. But that doesn't affect my appreciation of the witty, beautiful, and fanciful images throughout this book. It is a delight.

It was the cover that first drew me and made me curious to see what was inside. I was not disappointed. Ray Troll's art is fun and clever and spiritual and meaningful and superficial all at the same time.

You may infer from my review title that I am a fin, I mean, fan of Ray Troll's latest book, "Something Fishy This Way Comes." His T-shirts have long been cherished mementos of Alaskan adventures for discerning consumers. Now anyone can enjoy his quirky quips and truly accomplished art. Ray is a master of artful articulation. His artistic talent, coupled with his characteristic dry wit, make each illustration a delight. If you don't wear T-shirts, or if your closet is already bursting with his clever cloth comedy, this book can at least begin to satisfy your desire for more, more, more!
