What would it be like to sit down for an impassioned, entertaining conversation with Hillary Clinton? In Something Lost, Something Gained, Hillary offers her candid views on life and love, politics, liberty, democracy, the threats we face, and the future within our reach.
She describes the strength she draws from her deepest friendships, her Methodist faith, and the nearly fifty years she’s been married to President Bill Clinton—all with the wisdom that comes from looking back on a full life with fresh eyes. She takes us along as she returns to the classroom as a college professor, enjoys the bonds inside the exclusive club of former First Ladies, moves past her dream of being president, and dives into new activism for women and democracy.
From canoeing with an ex-Nazi trying to deprogram white supremacists to sweltering with salt farmers in the desert trying to adapt to the climate crisis in India, Hillary brings us to the front lines of our biggest challenges. For the first time, Hillary shares the story of her operation to evacuate Afghan women to safety in the harrowing final days of America’s longest war. But we also meet the brave women dissidents defying dictators around the world, gain new personal insights about her old adversary Vladimir Putin, and learn the best ways that worried parents can protect kids from toxic technology. We also hear her fervent and persuasive warning to all American voters. In the end, Something Lost, Something Gained is a testament to the idea that the personal is political, and the political is personal, providing a blueprint for what each of us can do to make our lives better.
Hillary has “looked at life from both sides now.” In these pages, she shares the latest chapter of her inspiring life and shows us how to age with grace and keep moving forward, with grit, joy, purpose, and a sense of humor.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2025This is the second Hillary Clinton book I've read in the past year. She has become one of my favorite authors and people. She is a bit older than I am but same generation. I think both she and her husband are brilliant people. I did vote for both of them, especially Hillary in this century. What a fantastic example of a honorable admirable woman.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025Being raised in the Bible Belt, midwest, Evangelical church, leaning toward Republicanism, I never trusted Hillary Clinton, but this book is a game changer. It pays to read. She's done so much, she's worked circles around me! She opens up a lot about her life, both personally and professionally. This book is very interesting and well-written, I have a new respect and admiration for her.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025I liked the book reading it with Hilliary Clinton's voice in my head. Insights into her long time female friendships and her marriage. Her religion has forms her still .Learned the amazing challenges into evacuating Afghan women, stuff movies are made of. She warns voters of need to study the facts, She shares areas of her life and it is not a strict autobiography. I passed it to a friend and she sped through it finding it an easy read insightful and provoking. Now passed to another. When it comes back to me, I am likely to read again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2024In Something Lost, Something Gained, Hilary Clinton opens up in what feels like an intimate coffee chat, sharing her reflections on life, loss, and legacy. She begins with an unfiltered look at the pain of her presidential defeat, an honesty that challenges her reputation for being guarded. Clinton’s vulnerability deepens as she reflects on how those feelings intersected with the January 6th insurrection... which makes the chapter “Remaining Awake Through a Coup” a standout and must read. But this book is about much more than politics. Clinton celebrates her lifelong friendships, recounts her efforts to support women during the U.S. evacuation from Afghanistan, and fondly remembers her last moments with her mother and so much more. With warmth and candor, Clinton offers readers a rare glimpse of her life beyond public office, balancing her political legacy with the personal connections that ground her journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2024This was a very interesting memoir by the former first lady, New York senator, secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee. This memoir talks about both her personal life as well as offers wide-ranging thoughts on global politics, friendships and the process of aging, as well as offering her views on topics including Russia and the upcoming U.S. election.
She has a sense of empathy toward others, and thinks about how her actions will affect others around her. She offers advice to the readers to help them channel the wisdom they need to make good choices and become good leaders.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024From the Introduction of the book, I was impressed by Hillary's viewpoint of our society's challenges. I have not always been aligned with her thinking, but she has an ability to present a view that contains wisdom which comes with age. The book is 'fair minded', balanced and insightful. I think she has been maligned throughout her life based upon people projecting their own mistrust of authority, rather than any substantive disagreement of content.
I liked her new insights andnperspective of where we are at Socially, Politically and Culturally. It seemed to be presented with a balanced viewepoint.
I laughably ignored many of the bad reviews which are by people who resent what she stands for: fairness, unequal rights for all and the right to live our lives through our personal choices - as long as they don't subvert the rights of others.
A good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2025A great read! But this book!

GinnyReviewed in Australia on October 24, 20245.0 out of 5 stars inspiring
What a remarkable woman. She has inspired so many women and she has genuine empathy and concern for their situations. Well written. An easy read.
UBReviewed in India on January 12, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Recommended read
A very engrossing read and reveals aspects of Hillary's personality that are not normally seen by the public. Aside from her legendary work ethic she has a good bunch of female friends and clearly a very loving family.
The struggles for civil rights and women's rights are clearly set out. Progress happens one step at a time. We always have to keep marching to counter the forces of reaction.
