About the Author

"Something of the Night" is Richard Neer's first work of fiction featuring detective Riley King and his talk radio ally Rick Stone, as they investigate crime along the eastern seaboard.

His work of non-fiction entitled "FM, the Rise and Fall of Rock Radio", (Villard 2001), is the true story of how corporate interests destroyed a medium that millions grew up cherishing. Neerhas worked in important roles both on and off the air at two of the most prestigious and groundbreaking radio stations in history---the progressive rocker WNEW-FM for almost thirty years, and the nation's first full time sports talker, WFAN over the past twenty eight. The follow-up to "Something of the Night", entitled "The Master Builders" was released in May of 2016.

He currently is in the final stages of preparing his next novel, "The Punch List", featuring the same protagonists.

I've worked professionally in the mystery genre; reviewer and collaborator and commentator - so I approached this with a degree of skepticism. Neer has previously written an important book on rock radio and is an adept and insightful sports commentator. But this genre is a tar pit for novices; the formulas are apparent to any regular reader, the tropes obvious and all the manifestations of Parker, McDonald, Chandler et. al. are well worn. You can generally tell whose presence you are in from the first paragraph - been there, done that, many, many times.
That said, this is a crackling good first effort. Clever, catchy, entertaining and a ripping good yarn, this guy has a future. It's the kind of work that takes you along for a good and rewarding ride and Neer just may be on to something; nifty dialogue, credible twists and turn, polished craftsmanship and engaging characters... I suggest you give this a try and settle back for a better than average genre-read. All said, Neer is closer than others the first time out. Well done.

Something Of The Night was a really enjoyable "page turner"! Riley King and Rick Stone are a couple interesting, although deeply flawed protagonists, crafted nicely by Richard Neer. I read lots of mysteries and I'm usually pretty good at figuring out "who done it". I have to say that I never saw the ending coming! I'm looking forward to more books with King and Stone.

I am a fan of Neer's listening to him WNEW-FM and now on sports radio. Also have read his previous book on FM radio. I liked this book. A lot of NJ references which I am familiar with. Interesting story with Catholic school, basketball, the mob, literary agents, pretty women all covered. May not up to par with the top mystery writers but it is a nice quick read and good for a first novel. Definitely worth a shot.

A most enjoyable murder who dun it with enough twists and turns to make you want to keep reading to the end. The characters are easy to relate to, the storyline understandable, and the ending ties up all the loose ends. It is an easy read and if you like murder mysteries this book will not disappoint.

Time doesn't' t allow me to read many books a year, but as a fan of Richards last book I knew that I would give this a try. Really enjoyed the story and especially the characters who all had a large amount of realism to them which made for a more enjoyable reading. Give it a read, you'll really enjoy it too.

Richard Neer writes great mysteries. The Riley King character is a joy to follow. Neer really keeps you "on the edge or your seat" in anticipation of what will happen next, and there are several story lines in play simultaneously.

Richard Neer has produced an enjoyable first foray into the detective genre. The basis of my enjoyment is the plot and the characters. I liked Riley King and Rick Stone and I look forward to more of their exploits. Mr. Neer does a nice job in weaving in his sports and local knowledge into the story and that made it more enjoyable for me. I look forward to future, more elaborate missives.
