Pokey LaFarge makes original Midwestern music. With one foot deep in the heart of the American musical tradition and the other firmly planted in the present, he continually challenges the notion that tradition-bearers fail to push musical boundaries. An eclectic writer and performer, he incorporates elements of early jazz, ragtime, country blues, Western swing, and beyond, transcending the confines of genre to present a sound very much his own. Something in the Water follows on the heels of his last album, released on Jack White's Third Man Records, but comes with an evolution in sound. Treated with a heavier dose of catchy rhythms and traditional drum kit percussion throughout, the 12 tracks on Something in the Water see LaFarge's sound imbued with new life. Produced by kindred spirit Jimmy Sutton, Something in Water showcases Pokey LaFarge's peerless gifts as a songwriter, performer, and entertainer, and further solidifies his place at the forefront of American music. Includes free MP3 full album download card.

I was disappointed with this CD however. It seems rushed and not as energetic as the self titled CD. I haven't checked to see if it has the same producer and band members. It feels like
"Something in the Water" is songs that didn't make the cut from the first CD I purchased. The instrument playing, vocals and songwriting lacks the enthusiasm of the " Pokey LaFarge" CD. If I had purchased, " Something in the Water", as my first Pokey LaFarge CD, I don't think I would have felt the need to look into a second CD. Because I like my first purchase of the Pokey LaFarge CD, I may see if the third time is the charm and try another of his cd's.
My favorite song has to be “Cairo, Illinois” though. It reminds me of my family and friends back home on a beautiful Saturday cruising through the hills of Southern Illinois enjoying life and each other’s company.
This is a great example of Midwestern music and life style. Please keep up the great work!
Pokey's voice is unusual, it reminds me a little of Huey "Piano" Smith (Cooba, Cooba, Cooba) from ages ago.
This CD, "Something in the Water" is a must to own if you love up-beat, foot-tapping music! (My 34 year old son, who also listens to horrible "metal" music, also really likes this CD!)
And the new tour is bringing them here (Seattle) this summer! Don't you dare miss it!

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a weak song on this record (unless old time music doesn't float your boat) but I also think it shows the worth of expanding his band although some will claim change is good.
I think its extraordinary good record but with some surprises.
Now on to the important stuff. Wonderful songs. Typical Pokey Lafarge, the new band members add something new to the sound. Still drive round with a smile on my face when I'm listening to this album.
try something different and this fits the bill I like it
