Editorial Reviews
2008 album from the New York-based Jazz ivory tinkler, a tribute to the legendary Bill Evans. Eliane's sonic style radiates throughout the album wither her distinctive juxtapositions of elegant phrasing, adventurous harmony and breezy swing. Subtitled Eliane Elias Sings & Plays Bill Evans, this is the perfect treat for fans of both artists. 17 tracks.

I am a recent fan of Eliane Elias. Her jazz instincts are spot on. Even though her roots are Brazilian, her jazz piano style is right out of New York. Her mastery of the keyboard is impressive, I can listen to her playing for hours. Great album!

There are two tributes that I highly recommend for Bill Evans fans. One is by Paul Motian simply titled Bill Evans with Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano, and Marc Johson. And the other is this release by Elaine Elias. Elias weaves through a nice mix of three Evans originals rarely heard plus several standards, such as But Not For Me. It was also very nice to hear certain songs with lyrics, such as Detour Ahead. I loved the precision which Bill Evans played this song. It was especially nice to hear the song to both music and words. Elias also sounds really close to Bill Evans on some of the slower cuts. Overall, this is an extremely nice CD. I just wished I could have heard RE: Person I Knew which was released only on the Japanese version of this CD.

I have followed Elaine Elias for years and been amazed at (and inspired with)her technical proficiency with the piano and her interpretations of the jazz classics. Her interpretations of Bill Evans accompanied by husband Mark Johnson, who was in the late Bill Evans Trio and highly thought of by Evans, make this a must have album for fans of both Elias and Evans. I think Elias shows some promise as a vocalist, but her voice is not strong. In addition, her vocals seem to suffer as it appears that her sense of the emotional meaning and pronunciation of the English wording is lacking when compared to other vocalist (Tierney Sutton, Tony Bennett to name just two). This may be because English is her second language after Portuguese. Contrast this with "Minha" on this same album which is not sung in Enlish and you can see that she is very capable of conveying deep emotional feeling and touching the listener. I hope she gets more coaching on the vocal side as this combined with her undeniable technical virtuosity on the piano will make her a jazz superstar.

Here's one for jazz lovers and romantics alike. A great trio. It strikes an interesting balance of honoring Bill and some Brazilian ambiance too. Eliane excells with her playing on the Steinway. Most cuts are instrumental but Eliane lends her sensuous voice to a few numbers. Bass and drums are excellent too. It felt like Evans was sitting in! There are 17 soothing, satisfying, nurturing tracks and i noticed this disc can really grow on you. Obrigado!

Another fine effort from Eliane, I have yet to be disappointed by anything of hers. To say I'm a bit smitten with Eliane is an understatement. I love hearing her put to words some of the songs that Bill Evans did instrumentally "A Sleeping Bee" and "Waltz for Debby" come to mind. This album has gotten a daily listen since I purchased it. I would highly recommend this album to anyone.

Marian MacPartland's Piano Jazz educated me about this CD. I would of never known about her or this CD. You can hear some of the tunes and learn about Bill Evans treasures. She's a real Brazilian Diva! Bill Evans is beyond this world and yet so simple. I love what she's done with his work. I love her voice and arrangements. Especially enjoyed Here is Something For You. She's a great piano player!

I heard Eliane for the first time during my first evening of listening to Jazz FM with the track "Blue in green". I immediately gave up the radio and called up Amazon on my laptop to discover the large number of CDs this amazing lady has put out. A quick whiz through the MP3 samples for this CD was all I needed. I also sampled "Everything I love" - another "yes!". I couldn't wait for both CDs to arrive. I am relatively new to jazz and jazz piano has quickly become my favourite, and for me Eliane's playing is a joy. I actually like her voice - ok, it isn't Astrud Gilberto, but somehow her duskier voice seems to blend in well with her playing. This is a great CD - "Blue In Green" and "My Foolish Heart" are gems, but many of the other tracks are also excellent such as "But not for me" (Notting Hill memories), "Detour Ahead", "Evanesque" and "After All". Lovely laid-back tracks, lovely tinkly piano, and Marc Johnson's bass blending in so well. This wonderfully relaxing CD is a must for anyone collecting her stuff. In just over the five months since I first heard her I have bought eleven of her CDs and at least two are in my car whenever I'm travelling anywhere.
