Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Students learn basic facts about a wide variety of marine life as they follow this singsong text, set to the tune of "Over in the Meadow." Clown fish, hermit crabs, tiger sharks, jellyfish, manatees, and sea turtles are just some of the ocean-dwelling creatures that readers meet along the way. While most of the rhymes are catchy, a few are awkward, such as "Somewhere in the ocean where the sea grass grows so even/lived a father sea horse and his wee babies seven-." The vibrantly colored, lively art is sure to hold children's attention. As extra assurance, the numerals are hidden throughout the illustrations. A glossary gives brief information on the plants and marine animals mentioned in the rhymes.

From Booklist

The nursery rhyme "Over in the Meadow" provides the model for the rhyming text of this picture book, but the habitat is the ocean, and the animal families are sea creatures. The idea works well, though the lines don't always trip easily off the tongue: "`Munch!' said the mothers. / `We munch!' said the five, / so they munched prickly urchins where the kelp forests thrive." Graceful of line and glowing with color, gouache paintings illustrate each quatrain on a double-page spread with a scene of sea life. The book ends with five pages of "Fun Facts" about the animals and their habitat as well as simple piano music and chords for setting the rhyme to music. Useful for teachers requesting picture books about ocean animals. Carolyn Phelan

I have been a childcare provider for 33 yrs and this is by far EVERY child's favorite book. I bought this for a child's birthday gift because she loved it so much at daycare. My copy is worn out, tapped pages etc. It has big beautiful illustrations about sea life. You sing it instead of read it, it has hidden numbers on each page and it encourages kids to count along as you read. This book is a must have in any child's library.

This is one of those books that you find at the library, and then love so much you just have to own it. The pattern of the text, the lovely illustrations, the great vocabulary of new words, all add up to an excellent book for group time, or quiet reading. We have also found it to spark rich discussions and creative art expression. There are lots of Ocean themed books out there. This one is a keeper!

This book's idea came from a book I loved as a child called " Over in the Meadow, Where the Green Grass Grows". This book has taken counting in the meadow to the beautiful world and animals that live under the sea!

The illustrator Kenneth J. Spendgler did an awesome job!! I absolutely love page 5 with the sea otters. To me, they are so cute I just want to swim out and hug them! Another super cool thing about this book is that on each page the number of the page is hidden somewhere in his artwork, some where easy for me to find, others challenging. To me, this book will grow with my daughter and she'll see that there is more to this book than just a counting!

As far as the young reader who reviewed this book it ad big words in it, the only place I could think of that has big words is on the last 5 pages of the book. This is where the authors included "Fun Facts" on the sea animals that are featured in the story and the fact that the author talks about how all animals either have an invertebrate or invertebrates. Or maybe it was the words " Sea Urchin" and "Sea Anemone" which to me either dances off my tongue or twists it about like a tongue twister!

An awesome book that includes the story to song, fun facts on the sea animals pictured and one heck of a terrific artist! For any lover of the sea, you just can't go wrong purchasing this book!

I teach a K-2 special education classroom and we are reading this book daily and doing a little dance to it to prepare for an upcoming school presentation. The kids love the rhyming and colorful pictures; I love covering math and science content. I am particularly pleased with the accuracy of the terminology, such as: a "raft" of otters and a "father" seahorse, these are all great details that as an educator I really appreciate. We have been reading it every day for the last month and my kids never get sick of it and are now saying it along with me at each reading.

We got this book at the library and my grandchildren loved it so much I had to get them a copy of their own. The two year old loves to show me the numbers which are hidden and his older sisters found. We sing the song instead of just reading and the kids go about singing the song without the book. The story and illustrations are fantastic. Finding the hidden numbers was challenging and fun.

Great book, cute song, lovely art. Some of the numbers were too hard to find but we managed to do it eventually! I had to look up the song to get the tune down...not a super well known melody in my world I guess! Love the book. Maybe perfect for a 3 year old but my 4 year old liked it too.
