Editorial Reviews

(2-CD set) Son House In Seattle 1968, the latest release from heritage blues label Arcola Records, offers a unique and personal presentation of Delta blues legend Eddie James 'Son' House, Jr. Recorded while visiting Seattle, this two-disc set comprises Son House's 1968 concert and interview, and features trademark renditions of classic blues songs such as Death Letter Blues, My Black Mama, and Preachin' Blues. Disc 2 also features performances by Louise Johnson, Charlie Patton, Willie Brown, Rube Lacy, and Robert Johnson, followed by Son House's recollections of these musicians and their work. As much a piece of blues history as a commercial release, Son House In Seattle 1968 is an essential addition to the canon of legendary Delta blues.

This review is for "Son House in Seattle 1968".

A double CD. The first disc is a concert. Just a handful of actual performances that are preceded by lengthy dialogues/introductions by Son House. The sound quality is superb throughout as are the performances themselves. In particular, this is the best sounding recording of his guitar that I have ever heard - you can really hear the deep, sharp tonal quality of his booming National guitar. Son is in fine form musically and there is no hint of age impeding his delivery here. Very enjoyable. He is still delivering the goods! The man was a blues giant and here you can hear why he still had that reputation... even in 1968!

The second disc is a nice interview interspersed with 78s performed by a few of House's contemporaries as well as some of his own 1930 material. The interview is revealing and interesting - he discusses his association as a mentor to Robert Johnson at length. While something you may not listen to repeatedly, this second disc is a certainly great companion piece to the first disc and nice to just have.

A worthy and essential double CD set for anybody interested in Son House.

The interview disc is a great thing to have.
Highly recommended.
Concert is typical for 1969. A little quiet when Son talks during the concert.
