I initially gave a copy to a dear friend a Trappist Monk, who believes this is one of the finest books he has read on Christ(my friend in his 80s,been a Monk 50 yrs). I have provided him with over 40 of this book so he can pass on to those he believes will benefit. Well written without the typical pious, theologically steeped language,in other words matter of fact. It presents the situation or world at Christ's time in clear detail. Just a very good book. I should add my friend received the Silver Star for his actions at the Battle of Leyte Gulf so he has seen life from many perspectives.

Highly recommend.

A truly remarkable writer. I especially appreciated the thorough research into biblical facts as well as Jewish and Roman history. He went to great lengths to explain things even using non-biblical accounts. Very interesting.

This is a very fine book; it is the book the "historical Jesus" and "Jesus Seminar" people do not write because they must gratify the market for new scandals and conspiracies. A reasonable as well as a Christian man, Fr. Alexander respects the primary sources and supplements them with historical classics of the period, archeological evidence, linguistic knowledge and Jewish tradition. Unlike the debunkers and conspiracy mongers, he writes from the heart and uses his intellect and scholarship to gain and share insight into the Gospel. This is the best of recent Christian biographies of the Saviour, truly Orthodox and written with integrity. He gave his life for what he writes, and gives his reader reason to do the same. Thank God.

How sad that this book is out of print. It is a very good translation of the original - I have read both the Russian and the English versions, and can testify that translator did a fantastic job. The book itself is without equals. Fr. Alexander Men was a bellwether of Eastern Orthodoxy and a "chrysostomos". His writing style is light and simple - a child can read it easily, and an adult would delight in it too.

You might know this, he was murdered. Many suspected the KGB, but many also thought there was a hand of the Russian Orthodox Church in it. While still a priest, he was loathed by the Church's hierarchy - for many reasons. He was a baptized Jew, he was brilliant, he was non-conformist, he was immensely popular with Moscow intelligentsia... all of it, and much more had made him a pariah within the Church. Many of his books were smuggled to the West and published under a pen name, to avoid an arrest by the KGB. But the same endangered the well-being of the Church's hierarchy, who found a safe balance working hand in hand with the Soviet secret police. Memory eternal, Father Alexander!

This remarkable book introduces the reader to the world of the time of Christ as if we are entering into it ourselves. To say Christ comes alive in this book is an understatement. Sadly it is out of print and hard to find, so buy it and read it even if you have to spend a lot of money.
