Editorial Reviews

Severn Records presents Mud Morganfield's Son Of The Seventh Son, the first national release by the eldest son of Muddy Waters. Mud Morganfield proves to be a chip off the old block with a powerful 12 song set of mostly original tunes in the classic Chicago blues style. Joining Mud are a top notch cast of backing musicians that includes Billy Flynn, Rick Kreher, Barrelhouse Chuck, E. G. McDaniel, Kenny Smith, Harmonica Hinds and producer/harp Bob Corritore. Mud's powerful voice can summon up the spirit in a way that is all but lost in today's contemporary blues world, and he and his powerful band will make you remember why you fell in love with the blues in the first place. Packaged in digi-pak format.

If your reading this, hoepfully you are interested in the blues, or Mud, the son of Muddy Waters. I was aware of Muddy's son Big Bill Morganfield (and can recommend all of his CD's!) but not Mud, until now. This CD, Son of the Seventh Son, is classic Chicago blues. You can certainly hear both Muddys influence, and pedigree in the music. This CD has about the best blues band you can assemble (Billy Flynn on guitar, Barrelhouse Chuck on piano, Kenny Smith on drums, etc) and the band sounds absolutely fantastic. Harmonica Hinds throws in some mean harmonica on about half the songs also. Mud sounds a bit like Muddy and these songs are well written (about half are by Mud himself). There are also a couple standards included. One of the best CD's of the year! I don't think you will be disappointed if you pruchase this CD.

Biggest menace prior to listening this album was work not being worth of positive review. It would be extremely uncomfortable saying appropriate unkindness in address of the son of the Father of Chicago Blues. Fortunately, apprehensions did not fulfill. Mud Morganfield, oldest son of great late Muddy Waters, put up a real Blues album, just his third in a career.

Twelve songs of Son Of The Seventh Son containing both covers and a batch of originals, take listener back to mid 20th century Windy City although concerns are slightly different from traditional but Mud's voice and performance style are so resembling to that of his father's and band's similarities are so obvious to that of Muddy's Blues band (Barrelhouse Chuck's Pinetopesque solo in "Loco Motor", Billy Flynn's analogy to Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson and Muddy himself, etc.) one even can't notice this album was released in 2012.

Not only similarities are valuable here. Mud is accomplished singer, fact already proven on his first two releases. His voice is powerful, gritty, and appropriately mild. His singing style is aggressive and overwhelming and the overall album, soaked with 60s Chicago club soul with the help of some fine Chicagoans of younger generation including guitarist Billy Flynn, harmonica ace Bob Corritore and son of Muddy's long-time drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith, represents fine addition to that city's Blues legacy.

Personnel: Mud Morganfield (vocals); Billy Flynn (guitar); Rick Kreher (guitar); Barrelhouse Chuck (piano, organ); Bob Corritore (harmonica); E.G. McDaniel (bass); Kenny "Beedy Eyes" Smith (drums).

Recording: Rax Trax Studios, Chicago, IL (2011)

This is an interesting album. Mud's voice certainly hearkens back to his father, and he's assembled a band much resembling one of Muddy's. As for the songs, the covers are on par, and the originals are worthy. In all, it's a solid effort, but not spectacular. The more I listen to Mud (or Big Bill), the more I want to hear the original musical Morganfield. I like the album fine, and will likely dust it off once in a great while. Muddy left some HUGE shoes to fill. Nobody will ever live up to his legacy, but it's nice to hear an echo every now and then.

The eldest son of the late great Muddy Waters has recorded a classic old school Chicago blues CD. As many have said, his singing does sound a helluva lot like his pops. But he can also get all velvety and smooth as he does on his self penned "Midnight Lover." A lot of great songs here, a couple Muddy covers, 7 originals by Mud Morganfield himself and a song each by session players Billy Flynn ( guitar ) and Bob Corritore ( harmonica and the producer of this CD ). Love the deep Chicago blues when its played and sung well...as it does here. Get it.
