This book was a great read! I cannot remember the last time that I read a book for fun, as the last 2.5 years I only had the time to read what my professors assigned to me. I found myself not wanting to put down Son of the Sleeper Spy until I finished it. It did not take long to read and was quite easy to comprehend. In my opinion, the legal concepts sprinkled in throughout the book are quite subtle. For the law reader, you'll know what they are and will easily identify them. For the non-legal reader, you'll be able to understand this book regardless of having no knowledge of the legal concepts when they come up.
I think for me, my favorite part was how I was able to identify with the main character, Alexei, on a personal level. I too come from a family with Russian heritage, and my family definitely expects greatness in all that I do because of their cultural roots. This puts a lot of pressure on one when studying for the bar exam. Like the main character, I've also been working full-time while trying to study, which wears me down and puts me in a constant state of exhaustion. However, the fact that his hard work and persistence finally paid off and he passed the bar in the end gives me glimmer of hope that I will be able to do the same (but hopefully on my first try!).
As a third-year law student, I am preparing for the July bar exam, and I think that whether you are in the process of preparing to take the exam for the first time, or if you are studying for the second time, this book will assuage some anxiety that you may have about studying. You will realize as you go through the book that you understand and remember a lot of the legal concepts mentioned, all the while enjoying a captivating storyline and relating to the main character, Alexei.
I recommend this book to any current law students or any recent graduates studying for the bar exam. I look forward to further works by E.J. Law!
