I have a large collection of recordings of the last Schubert sonata -- perhaps 25 or more. I collect them because I have played it -- and have strong feelings for the work. There are some excellent versions available including Hough, Goode and Schnabel. This recording is certainly a contender for the finest recorded performance. The work has great beauty -- but is also a bit long and requires a superb performance to keep one's attention for the entire work. Chodos makes it a joy. I hope there will be some additional recordings from him. The bad news is that your average record store won't carry this performance -- and since "Chodos" isn't a household name -- and Centaur isn't Sony, this recording will likely be cherished just by those who take the time to search for the undiscovered beauty.

I am a sometime student of Mr. Chodos, and all the things that attract me to his teaching are contained on this CD. The sound is gorgeous, the time-scale hypnotic. In the Allegretto, he reveals an melancholic side to the piece that has never been heard before. D 960 is gripping and expressive in ways no one else can imitate.
