Editorial Reviews

Song In My Head is perhaps the band s tightest and most skillful album yet. After years of feeling more like live players than studio musicians, the band members finally tapped into the skill that two decades worth of performing brings. There s also an overarching sense of joy and renewed passion throughout. Stylistically, the album feels like the most modern expression of our music, drummer Michael Travis says. This album feels more genuinely us. It s everything we ve learned about making an album.
The coolest part of this album is that, in the end, it really sounds like us, maybe more so than any of the other albums that we ve done. Bill Nershi, The String Cheese Incident

For a band like The String Cheese Incident, it s odd to think that 20 years into a remarkable career, their ninth album - and first studio album in nine years - would really epitomize their sound. But that s the message with Song In My Head the band s new album, produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads that includes 10 new songs written collaboratively by the group over the past nine years. This is a 4 panel digipack with 8 page booklet.

I saw the band in Oakland on Saturday and they were selling this album ahead of the general release.

This is String Cheese Incidence's sixth studio album. It is about 55 minutes long and the sound quality is very good to excellent.

This album is a lot like the first three studio albums. It is a collection of songs from the four song writers in the group. It is roughly an equal mix, but as usual with a little more input from Nershi and less from Moseley. The songs are all played in the String Cheese style, just like the first the three albums. The only difference is that this album may be slightly more polished with a slightly richer sound, similar to how their live concerts have evolved.

Like the first three albums, there are basic songs (nothing like that strange, wonderful suite on Untying the Not) in the different styles of the different band members. Some are very good. Some are an acquired taste.

I was not a fan of the previous studio album, One Step Closer, where I thought the producer, Malcolm Burn, stripped all the life out of the songs. On the "making of" video for that album, the band would play the songs in an interesting manner, then Burn would say that it would be much better when he stripped it down. It made me cringe.

If you like older String Cheese this will be a welcome addition to your album collection. Classic jam and bluegrass tunes with the usual mix of island rhythms, electronica, funk and reggae. Excited to hear them live!

Good mixture of jamming, fun songs, and thoughtful ones. I do recommend the 'deluxe' version for the extra three live cuts. A bit more 'western' and popish than most String Cheese, but very enjoyable still. I'd have liked a bit more jamming, hence get the deluxe, but I find myself listening a lot to this during my work day. Kind of a mellow cheese so to speak, yet still tasty. Recommended.

Have been listening to String Cheese Songs on Jam On covering a wide range of tour dates, with of course RiverTrance being my all time favorite, but other performances have stood out and finally decided I needed to own some Cheese. The songs lately were aired as "new" which led me to this CD which has several of my favorites from the radio. This CD does not disappoint. It is this good from track one to track 11. Their studio cut should be attracting all the kids these days; I sure wish they could experience this group, as this album is more "hip" and upbeat that is safe for all ages. I have even thought my grandmother who loves bluegrass would like this entire album. It's fun, engaging, great instrumentals and even a song to cry with. But all in all, this is an upbeat record, no live performance cut and these guys are by far one of the best groups around. Too bad I never knew who they were until about two years ago.

Great studio album by one of the best live improv groups currently playing. I've grown to love SCI, still appreciate their on-the-fly improvisational ability but this album ratchets things up a level or two. May they continue to grow and prosper!

This is simply a great CD. It is hard to pick out any of the songs on it as my favorite as they are all great and serve as a good introduction to the group if you have any of your friends who are not yet SCI fans. I would recommend without reservation.

This is hands down Cheese's best studio album to date. They took a bunch of fan favorites and took them into the studio and absolutely killed it under the supervision of a great producer (Jerry Harrison, Talking Heads). This album is one of the first where they stayed within the roots in the studio and the album sounds more like them than any other album. Worth it to check it out if you are a fan of cheese or the jam scene.

I am such a huge SCI fan....and, I really wanted to love this album as it is something new(ish) from my all-time favorite jam band! However, I would have to describe this album as "sleepy". I love the SCI that makes me want to bounce around and sing along.....this SCI album made me want to take a nap it was sooooooo slow :(
