Setting: Rural Kansas, 1935

Sensuality: 6

Molly McKenzie's peaceful world is shattered one summer evening in 1935 when gangsters kill her parents while robbing their country store. Hod Dolan, the federal agent sent to investigate the crime, suggests a plan to use Molly as bait to trap the gunmen. While Hod knows the plan threatens all of their lives, he doesn't know that protecting Molly will endanger his heart. Drawn to the lovely young woman at first sight, Hod finds himself falling deeply in love with her. Molly, however, is still struggling to deal with the violent death of her parents and is wary of loving a man whose occupation is fraught with danger. Bound together by their mutual determination to bring her parents' killers to justice, the two begin to forge a relationship, but neither of them knows yet of another threat to their lives that is darker, more sinister, and much closer to home.

With Song is the second in a trilogy by Garlock that began with her bestselling novel, With Hope. Set in the rural Midwest during the dangerous and fascinating 1930s, these novels offer an intriguing look at life during the Dust Bowl years--and they ring with authenticity. Hod and Molly are strong, honorable, and courageous characters whose story is balanced by colorful secondary characters and a well-developed plot, making Garlock's latest offering a satisfying read. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Library Journal

This is the second in Garlock's wonderful Depression-era series and a sequel to With Hope and followed by With Heart. It is set in Deward County, KS, in 1935 and begins with young Molly McKenzie singing lightheartedly as she changes the sheets in the upstairs living quarters of McKenzie's General Store. When she hears a series of loud pops, she thinks her father is plaguing her mother with the latest shipment of firecrackers, but she looks out the front window to witness two men getting into a big black car. When she goes downstairs, she discovers that both her parents have been killed and the store robbed. Molly's world is further upset by the advent of Hod Dolan, a federal agent, who convinces Molly to let him use her as bait to lure the bad guys back to the scene of the crime, not realizing just how dangerous this will prove to be. Even listeners who normally shun romances will enjoy this narrative, read by Kate Forbes, for the suspense, the interesting setting, and great characters. Enthusiastically recommended for all public libraries. Barbara Perkins, Irving P.L., TX

With Song is the second in the series about the 1930's. While I was not crazy about "With Hope" I fell in love with "With Song".
Molly is eager to catch the two gunmen who killed her parents. She agrees to let Hod, a government agent, use her as bait to lure the outlaws back to the store. At first, Molly doesn't like Hod at all, he is gruff and at times, insulting. As they prepare for the gunmen to return for Molly, she begins to see another side of him and gradually falls in love. After losing her parents so violently, she is hesitant to open herself up to more hurt.
Once again, the secondary characters in this novel are outstanding. Molly's aunt, her best friend, and the sinister preacher help to bring the story along. Johnny Henry also makes an appearance and we learn how Henry Ann is doing.
I highly recommend this book. It is truly romantic and it is nice to see characters stuggle to with their feelings instead of just instantly falling in love.

I Enjoyed With Song the most of the Dolan boys stories. Perhaps as a lawman Hod - sworn to protect and lay down his life for others - was the most protective of his Molly. Although he started off by putting her in danger, his character was the one who I felt who was most reflective of the words "love is patient..." i.e, the most unselfish.

Once again Dorothy Garlock delivers a fantastic book with a wonderful story and characters. The combination of romance, mystery and suspense are perfect. I'm really looking forward to WITH HEART due out in October 1999, which continues this great series of books set in the 1930's.

I’m a bit mixed on this book. I liked certain aspects, the aspects that are most important to a historical romance, so guess that’s good. But other areas of this story seemed very overblown and unrealistic. I know one is supposed to suspend reality a bit when reading this genre. However, there’s only so much suspending that can go on before a book becomes un-enjoyable.

I liked the leads and the romance. Molly and Hod were immediately likable and seemed to click quickly. Molly was a strong personality that wasn’t afraid to face danger to get justice for her parents. She’s able to slap down unwanted advances easily, yet she has a very vulnerable side as well. I liked that mix. Hod was a fantastic, protective hero that balanced out Molly’s vulnerabilities. I liked that as protective as he was, he also gave her the room she needed to grow as an individual and come to the relationship on equal terms.

The timeframe the author chose to set her romance in was also a nice change of pace. I’ve not come across a romance set during the Depression era often (I can only think of one right off the top of my head). The hard economic times and the escalation of organized crime activities added a nice spice.

However, I found the overall plot to be misleading and just too overblown. The book’s premise, start point, is Molly acting as bait to catch the mobsters who murdered her parents. The book starts out strong with this. However, very soon, the plot swerves into a completely different direction and the whole mobster thing peters out to nothing really. The big bad actually has nothing to do with the criminals at all.

And that big bad?? I hated him. I thought he was far too theatrical and over-the-top to be enjoyable.

I have just started reading Dorothy Garlock. I have found her one of the most knowledgable authors in the Depression era. I think we need more books about the hard times that people had to endure during that period. There are too many young people today that do not have a clue what it was like to have to work for a living. I now appreciate what my mother and father had to go through. I grew up in Kansas also, and this book made every thing seem so real. Thanks heavens for people who bring real life into their stories so we all can learn some history. I can't wait for With Heart, in October 99' I am looking forward to getting on with The Dolan's and how they make out.
