Editorial Reviews

In this moving anthology the sons and daughters of pop music's most legendary artists put a personal touch on the classic songs made famous by their fathers. It's an emotional tribute to their Dads, connecting great songs between two generations. The unique artistry of Ben Taylor, AJ Croce, Salvador Santana, Jen Chapin, Ky-Mani Marley, Devon Allman and other talented offspring brings a freshness to these classic songs that's all their own.

'A Song For My Father' is a powerful testament to the ties that bind and proof that sometimes musical genius runs in the family.

This in an interesting CD; second generaton artists performing songs of their fathers. Being a huge Brian Wilson fan, I bought this CD mainly for Carnie and Wendy's version of "Warmth of the Sun". Most of the renditions are fairly true to the originals but a few are "modernized" a bit.

Salvador Santana's version of "Evil Ways" is freshened up a bit from the original. Matthew and Gunnar Nelson's "Travelin' Man" has way too much bass added. I can't even listen to it without shutting off my equalizer. I guess it's great if you want to thump the windows out of your car.

"Lover's Cross" by A. J. Croce, "Cat's In The Cradle" by Jen Chapin, "Midnight Rider" by Devon Allman, and "Up On The Roof" by Louise Goffin (Carole King) are all pleasant versions of the originals.

I was familiar with the George Jones version of "Bartender's Blues" which was written by James Taylor. His son, Ben, sounds remarkably like him here.

"Soul Shake Down Party" by Ky-Mani Marley is a song I wasn't familiar with. It's ok, but doesn't do much for me. "Bird On A Wire" is another song that I was familiar with through Johnny Cash's version. Here it's performed by Adam Cohen, son of composer Leonard Cohen.

"Yellow Moon" by Ian Neville is ok. I've always enjoyed Wilson Phillips and Wendy and Carnie Wilson's version of "Warmth Of The Sun" and Chynna Phillip's verson of "Got A Feeling" are both quite good.

"Run To Me" by Spencer Gibb is also true to the Bee Gees version. The last cut is Arlo Guthrie's "Coming Into Los Angeles" performed by his daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie. It's a low-key acoustic version. Not nearly as much fun as the original.

These are classic songs and it's fun hearing them performed by the offspring of the original composers. It's not a "must-have" CD but for the money it's not bad.

The originals are songs from "my" generation and loved by the original artists, the fathers. Now, hearing their sons and daughters singing the same songs is nothing short of amazing. That music gene is SO strong. If you close your eyes, you almost can't tell the difference as to who is singing. AJ Croce and Ben Taylor's voices are almost spooky [and all of the Taylor's sound alike - it's amazing that it's now into the next generation]. Jen Chapin, Salvatore Santana, Ky-Mani Marley [and all of the rest] all do their father's proud. We've all heard other artists sing these songs many times, but knowing that their son's or daughter's are singing, makes it that much more special. The talent is amazing. At the same time, you realize that being a "star" can be so hit or miss as these artists could be just as famous as their famous father's. Buy it and smile a lot.

"A Song for My Father" is a strong set of tributes to male songwriters by their sons and daughters. It's an interesting concept. More often than not, it pays off handsomely. Salvador Santana rips up Santana's signature hit "Evil Ways" with thundering guitars that update the sound of this catchy track. Devon Allman's Honeytribe has that classic moan that always made the Allman Brothers Band's classic "Midnight Rider" a favorite. Gerry Goffin & Carole King's "Up On the Roof" works well with daughter Louise's thinner voice doing a journeyman's job polishing the attractive melody. Ben Taylor's CDs have never reached the popularity of his famous parents, James Taylor & Carly Simon, but "Bartender's Blues" is a strong tribute to his dad's music. Ivan Neville's take on the Neville Brothers' "Yellow Moon" is funky and rivets attention. Carnie & Wendy Wilson do a great job of breathing life into those hard-to-copy harmonies of The Beach Boys on "Warmth of the Sun." Chynna Phillips may actually eclipse The Mamas & the Papas' original "I've Got a Feeling" with a delightful version. Spencer Gibb does a strong version of The Bee Gees' "Run to Me." Aside from the lack of energy on Sarah Lee Guthrie's take on "Coming Into Los Angeles," there are no weak tracks on the set. Enjoy!

These sons & daughters of rock stars from the Peace & Love era are incredibly talented and, in some cases, are almost imossible to distinguish from their parents' voices and intonation. How could that not be Gregg Allman? How could that not be Jim Croce? But each artist also puts his or her own spin on things. Arlo Guthrie's daughter does a fantastic take on Immigration Man. Every song on this CD is a gem.

The first time that I heard this song was forty years ago, and AJ's version is like hearing it all over again. I believe that good music will always stand the test of time, even if it gets put on the back burner now and then.

Remarkable remakes of great songs done in a creative and memorable way. Santana and Neville remakes are exceptional standouts. AJ Croce is incredible!
