Editorial Reviews

Review

“I lost myself in the first book and am happy to say I was equally engrossed in the second…Lark does not stint on richly drawn characters. To anyone who may be dismayed by the book’s length, trust me, you’ll wish it was even longer. I eagerly await the next installment.” —Historical Novels Review

Sigh. What a big, soaring novel. It's the kind of book that I can get lost in. Like the first novel in the series, the characters are very well developed - both the heroes and the villains. And there see villains! The author did a good job of carrying the original characters forward, and I appreciated the subtle reminders about who some of the characters were - it's been a while since I read the first book. I so appreciate how the author brings New Zealand near the turn of the 20th century alive - love it.

Read the first book of this series "In the Land of the Long White Cloud" and could not wait for this book to come out. I pre-ordered it for my Kindle and it downloaded as soon as it was available. Such a neat idea. I am about half way through this book and am enjoying it as much as the first. I hope there will be a third in this series. This is just my kind of read and it is difficult to put it down when I start reading. It takes place in the 1800"s and I so enjoy books of that era.

I enjoyed the first book in the two in this series, but after reading the first few chapters getting to know the characters, I skipped to the middle, read a few chapters, then skipped to the last three chapters.

Found out all I wanted to know.

There was too much of a time gap between the first and second book. This book should have picked up where the first left off, instead I found myself spending far too much time trying to figure out who was who, and in the process completely lost all interest in the characters and the story.

This book failed me.

Engaging and suspenseful down to the last chapter, Song of the Spirits provides insight into the history of New Zealand, especially the melding of its native inhabitants with the pioneers who arrived seeking their fortunes, via whaling and seal fur trading, the gold rush, or the development of the wool industry. Sara Lark intertwines historical information with details regarding daily living during that era, bringing to life the struggles encountered. Her strong female lead characters are inspiring.

Usually the sequel is not as good as the original. This was the exception. The continuation on characters was interesting and believable. The ending left me wishing for another. Sarah. Lark is a good storyteller.

Book was not predictable and held my interest until the end. I will read more of this author`s work in the future.

The story is very interesting, but the writing and dialog reminds of a not very talented love story magazine. As much as I wanted to find out what happened, in the long run I just couldn't keep reading. I was hoping for another WILDFLOWER HILL and got popular romance instead>

I really enjoyed the first installment of this saga, but Part 2 failed me. After the first quarter of the book, it was easy to predict exactly what the characters were going to do and what was going to happen to them. I lost interest and didn't bother finishing the book.
