Next, as soon as the New York skyline was mentioned early on in the book, I knew what was going to happen, and that knowledge built tension in me, as a reader, throughout the whole story. By the time I hit September, my heart was racing and I was already about to cry, and I honestly sobbed when it all went down. But nothing was overplayed or felt like exploitation in any way. It felt very real, the characters reactions and responses felt real, and it was handled in a way that was true to life, but also true to what we already know about the characters and their idiosyncrasies.
Also, it was lovely to see the characters mellowing just a little, as humans who work on themselves will eventually do. Sometimes, characters in a series don't ever grow and evolve, and eventually that becomes annoying, because real people do change. Kobras allows her characters to grow in a way that feels intrinsic to the story and organic to the character him/herself.
On a personal note: when Naomi realizes that, although they have a large house, she and Jon always end up spending the bulk of their time together in a certain room, that gave me a wonderful idea for a way I want my life with my husband to change. He agrees with me, and we are working on effecting that change very happily, so thanks for that. :)
I believe one of the prospects I enjoyed most about this entire trilogy was that throughout it all, Ms. Kobras kept true to the characters' natures. Both were headstrong in their ways, and loving one another was their only flaw, to their true delight. The interaction between parental figures, and subsequent knowledge of their own mortality, also took shape and form, still keeping intact the delight of their true spirit and dreams.
Thank you, Ms. Kobras, for introducing me to your characters - all of them. I have one question. In my mind, I believe I know who you based your protagonist, Jon, upon. Do you wish to share that with us? If not, I will keep my vision of your Jon in my mind as I see him. Thank you again.
For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
