Product Description

This 1974 fan favorite features the killer Shakey Ground plus Happy People; Glasshouse , and more.

Amazon.com

Leon Russell's title track had already become a modern standard recorded by everyone from the Carpenters to Willie Nelson by the time the Tempts got to it on this 1975 disc. With the number of original group members shrunken by death and departure, it no doubt held plenty of resonance for those who carried on. The record's highlight, though, is "Shakey Ground," driven by P-Funk-ers Eddie Hazel and William "Billy Bass" Nelson. What remains is thoughtful, somewhat shallow, and not up to the level of innovation Motown colleagues Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye, not to mention the Tempts themselves, had reached. A good album, if one that fails to meet its goal of true significance. --Rickey Wright

is what this album invokes. This is my FAVORITE TEMPTS album and one that is more meaningful now then it was when I first heard it. When I first heard it, I was a junior in high school. I eventually had this one on 8-Track, but before that, my favorite radio station, [local station], just about played every song on the album...and what songs to choose from: "Happy People," "Shakey Ground," "GLASS HOUSE," "I'm a Bachelor," "A Song for You" and my favorite jam, "MEMORIES." I hear that song and get CHILLS. Dennis Edwards, my favorite leading man in the Tempts history, is in fine voice throughout and on this song, he's too on target! Remember, "if you're livin' in a GLASS HOUSE, don't throw no stones"...and get this CD if you don't already have it! A 70's CLASSIC!

Rickey Wright got it wrong, this album is all that and a bag of chips, and a pack of Bubblelicious! 1975, I was a freshman in college and everyone was jamming to 'Shakey Ground', but I was always drawn to the "b" (ballad) side of the set; A Song for You, Memories, Firefly and I'm a Bachelor. Not a weak sister in the bunch, all prime filet. That five-part harmonizing that no one could touch was in fine, fine form. Dennis earned his "Temptations Forever" tag with this one, he put his own stank on it, beyond any of the Norman Whitfield days...for me anyway. There was nothing after this album that touched me the way this one did.

I was blessed to see the "Original" Temps; Otis, Paul, Eddie, David and Melvin at the tender age of 13 and YES they were the singin'est, steppin'est, dressin'est group out there, truly "the Emperors of Soul"...GET THIS.

Even though The Tempts had the majority of their hits under the production of Norman Whitfield, by the mid 1970s, their LPs got to be redundant and hard-to-believably BORING. They seemed to be more like Norman Whitfield productions than Temptations' songs. This CD, A SONG FOR YOU, is a welcome change. Produced by Jeffrey Bowen, this CD features romantic songs ("Memories", "A Song For You", "Firefly"), and driving, funky dance tunes ("Glasshouse", "Shakey Ground", "Happy People"). Dennis Edwards, THE voice of the Tempts in the '70s, takes command of these songs like only he can (except on "Firefly", where Richard Street has the lead). One of the very best of the Tempts' LPs from that period, without a doubt. Great harmonies as always, but that's a given. We're talking about THE TEMPTATIONS. How can you expect anything different? GET IT.

This was the last album/cd that for me, at least, maintained the richness of the " Temptations' sound " . For one thing, it's the last cd with the underated great first tenor Damon Harris. Damon's voice sounded so much like Eddie Kendricks, it's scarry. I was sad to see him leave. The Tempt's sound was never quite the same. Further proof of this can be heard on The temptation CD " Live In Japan ", which was recorded in late 1973. On this CD you can clearly hear how much Damon Harris sounds like Eddie Kendricks, because it's live and they do some of the old classics that were sung by Eddie. This is not to say that they weren't still great, they were/are. But listen to the harmonies with Damon on top,and as Damon sings lead on the six albums he recorded, while he was a member of the group, and you'll have to admit that the sound was decidely different, once Glen Leonard took over at first tenor. Damon sounds so much like Eddie. But getting back to this album, it's as great an album as ever done by this collection of " Tempts " . For me, this is the best collection of Temptations aside from the original five (if you allow for the fact that David really isn't an original, though most people consider him to be, myself included.) . I love both the "A" side and the "B" side, though the "B" side with " A Song for You" , " Memories" , " I'm a Bachelor " (which they wrote) and " Firefly " are all classics, indeed. An exceptional album/cd-period. Definitely five stars.

A Song For You is a great album. Appears that some of the average rated reviewers are stuck in the My Girl era, the 60s. The album is a even balance of fast and slow tracks. The up tempo cuts are kickin, The ballads are wonderful. 5 stars!!!!!

Gruff voiced soul-man Dennis Edwards was the sound of post-Eddie Kendricks, post-David Ruffin Temptations...indeed it was the Dennis-to-Eddie (with a slick supple falsetto that evvybody loved) lead vocal handoff, like a smooth running lateral pass in a football game, that sets the basis for what many a vocal group tries to accomplish today ....this was one of Dennis' shining moments and notwithstanding the fact that "Song For You" was already something akin to a musical cliche, the LP/CD allowed for some innovation and growth on the groups' part. Already with the rising of the Commodores and producer James Carmichael, the Tempts had the right Motown in-house team to produce hits--with a more than able assist from funky axe man Eddie Hazel. Indeed, "Happy People" and "Glass House" sound as if the Commodores, with Hazel were sealing that black envelope package the LP came in with their royal ring signature....side one was the jahmmin' side and side two was the mellow side!. "Song for You", "Memories", "I'm A Bachelor" and the excellent "Firefly" showcase Dennis at his stirring, emotional best and his vocals here helped to keep the Temptations the ultimate soul vocal group....after which, the Tempts put out maybe an album every 2 or 3 years (one was a Rick James produced reunion of ol' and new Tempts which included Dennis) and Dennis had some solo hits--most notably "Don't Look Any Further"--in my opinion, he is on the par with Teddy P. or Luther Vandross and I, for one, hopes he can find his way back into the studio and put his distinctive stamp back on the airwaves.
