Great Stuff, Deep Dig Into Album and Collaboration

To start with, the main album is fabulous. It's a terrific collaboration between Costello and Bacharach, and the performances and arrangements are top notch.

The stars of this set are the extra 3 CDs, in that the main album is available elsewhere for less. The extra discs are fascinating if you love these guys and the album. The first disc comprises the songs for the would-be proposed musical, performed by an array of artists. The second disc comprises songs from the album performed live by Costello and Bacharach. The third disc are standard songs of Bacharach performed by Costello. A majority, though not all, of the extra material is not available elsewhere.

The set is housed in a fabric covered hardcover book, with pockets inside for the CDs, the LPs, and the two booklets. One booklet has detailed track information, while the other contains a long essay written by Costello on his musical history with and appreciation of Bacharach. There are also shots lining the inside of sample pages of the script of the proposed musical.

It's a wonderful set overall. But I knock off a star for two things - 1) The retail is way overpriced at $180. At ~$70, it's well worth it for the extras.

2) The second reason I knock it down a star is that the sound quality, while good, is not always great. It's more about the tonality, which can be bright, and dynamically it can seem a bit strained. Soundstage, though, is pretty large and images are rendered pretty large as well.

But the LPs were disappointing. I tried two sets and the LPs came in warped enough that I could hear the piano notes wiggle. I have a sense that where the sets are kept in the Amazon warehouse are too warm, as the shrinkwrap seemed to be a bit too tight around the book cover, causing it to slightly curve.

And the sound of the LPs is overall not as good as the sound on the single LP issue by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. The MoFi has a greater sense of ease and effortlessness, far better than the original CD. The LPs of this new set sound more reined in dynamically, less free. And again, tonally perhaps a bit bright..

Still, the music on this set is terrific. If you're not so into the deep dive into the music, just get the CD or standard LP. If you're really into vinyl reproduction, see if you can find the MoFi. It sounds better overall.

For ~$70, though, you'll get your money's worth, particularly if you get LPs that aren't warped.

Classic album expanded but overpriced for the contents.

The classic collaboration between Elvis and Burt was well received with a clutch of great songs. This expanded edition is a bit overpriced but it does have some excellent content. We get the original album remastered along with two vinyl LPs (both quiet and well pressed with my copy). There is also a disc with the musical “Taken from Life” which Elvis and Burt had planned with Chuck Lorre. Rounding out the set are two live discs.

Handsomely designed the set is about the size of an LP boxed set. There are two oversized booklets with notes for Declan MacManus as well as a booklet with lyrics and credits for the set. It’s a marvelously designed set and, while it combines CDs with LPs (which some fans won’t like), the set has plenty of new material that hasn’t been released (19 plus 3 newly re-recorded songs by Burt and Elvis).

The sound quality? The LPs sound quite nice on the set ai got. The CDs are compressed but not (to my ears) painfully so. Still, it would have been nice to get dynamic well mastered discs. It’s just my take. I’d rather have the content than not regardless of imperfect mastering for the CDs.

Overall, this is a nice set honoring Burt’s memory and his collaboration with Elvis. Is it flawed? Yes.
