This is absolutely one of my favorite cover song albums. The horn and piano renditions are hauntingly beautiful.
Sadly Irwin Mayfield is under a cloud of suspicion at the moment (March 2021) as he awaits a sentencing decision on his guilty plea to defraud New Orleans' public library support charity of $1.3 million by routing funds to the jazz orchestra he founded and where he earned a six-figure salary.

I was excited about getting this record. I've been a fan of Ellis Marsalis and especially his work with ballad material. I had only heard of Irvin Mayfield and must say his playing is just alright although I do like his overall tone. The music feels very thrown together, like a compilation of performances. One song features an orchestra, one is a quartet piece while another is live. Sometimes this works great, labels put out best of and ballads albums all the time that take from several records of a performers career. Here however, it just feels inconsistent. Irvin Mayfield plays nicely throughout only to throw in a giant fluff and squeal at the end of a song. It may work on a regular album but not one called "Love Songs, Ballads and Standards". Marsalis is great throughout as expected and the arrangements are good.
It's hard to put my finger on exactly why this album didn't thrill me but I do keep coming back to the realization that there are many better albums out there that cover this type of material (see Wynton Marsalis's Standard Time 3 for example).
I'd recommend this album for fans of either player only. Again, if your new to jazz or only like the quieter songs there are far better albums to check out first.

I heard "My One and Only Love" on satellite radio a while back, and came home to purchase this. So glad I did, as it stays in heavy rotation. I think I listen to this once a week at least.

Mayfield is a great artist with a horn...got to hear him in New Orleans and it was a special evening. This CD
captures the spirit of that performance ....just a great CD and a chance to expand your list of artists.

Not sure whats going on here. The CD seems to be a compilation of different recordings, even some live recordings. The CD is poorly produced, bad recordings, and hard to listen to.
