This CD is getting a pretty big publicity push, considering that most of the world (incorrectly) pigeon holes Rick Springfield as a one-hit wonder. The 4 different covers may sound like overkill or a money grab or whatever, but Universal Music wouldn't have spent the money to manufacture all of those different versions if they didn't think that anyone was going to buy them. And hopefully people will give this CD a chance. It's truly amazing that someone that has been in the music biz this long is putting out the most energetic, creative music of his career. Rick Springfield has somehow found this little niche between modern rock, current pop and 80's MTV-era big chorus arena rock. The songs are infectious, the lyrics are intelligent and the production is top notch. This CD never sounds like it's stuck in the 80s... but it's still accessible to any old Springfield fans that may not have heard anything that he's done in the past 20 years. And that's important. Rick is a damn good (and very underrated) songwriter, and his talent is what separates him from many of the other faces that once ruled MTV.

I took a girl to a Rick Springfield concert a few years back. She had no idea who he was or what kind of music that he played (some friends of hers had told her that Rick sang Country!) The only "current" artist that I could compare him to was Foo Fighters. If you take just about any Rick Springfield song and turn up the guitars and the distortion, you have Foo Fighters... very well crafted rock songs that have pop sing-along big choruses. All of you Springfield fans should listen to Wasting Light the latest Foo Fighters release and you'll see what I mean.

Rick Springfield just knows how to craft good songs and good albums, plain and simple. And so much of what he brings to the table is missing from today's music. Good songwriting, emotional lyrics, and power pop/rock and roll like it was meant to be played. Springfield has taken a few breaks from recording over the years but aside from those gaps he has delivered consistent album after consistent album, with the themes and tones of his work varying slightly but staying true to what he has always done best.

"I Hate Myself" makes for a great single, the emotional guitar-studded ballad "You & Me" recalls the Gin Blossoms at their finest. "Gabriel" is a beautifully written ballad as well. As far as the rockers go, he may have his best set of hooks in decades, with "Wide Awake" and "Our Ship's Sinking" hitting hard right off the bat. This is an artist who knows what he does best, does not try to stretch the formula too far, but works like a craftsman. He has this type of music down to a science, and he has never sounded more immediate and enthusiastic as he does now, nearly three and a half decades into his career.

Possibly Rick Springfield's best album ever. Incredibly powerful heavy guitar tracks balanced with beautifully crafted lyrical pop-rock ballads. The songs are infectious. Always current and relevant, Rick Springfield never disappoints. Be sure to get this new release! This album will make you forget Jessie's Girl and have you singing new Rick songs.....until the end of the world!!

I've been meaning to get here to write a review since my Amazon order arrived, but I've been to busy listening to the CD and enjoying the bonus content! Rick has embraced cyberspace with an app for both iDevices and Android which allows you to access bonus content for each of the four covers in the form of extra songs and videos from a private website. It's really cool! In addition, his merchandise site has an array of items based on the covers including a really awesome steampunk necklace and bracelet I've got to have! (To any friends or family reading this... my birthday and Christmas are just around the corner and Rick Merch ([...]) has gift cards!) Anyway back to the CD review - If you ever listened to Jessie's Girl (and who alive since 1981 hasn't?) then you owe it to yourself to give this one a listen! Rick always delivers strong lyrics with catchy chorus lines but the songs here will be in your head even when not listening to the CD. I love that we finally get a few ballad type songs with I Found You and Joshua, a song clearly written about Rick's love and concern for his son. Since there is different bonus content with each cover I also purchased from iTunes and Best Buy. The song Let Me In from the bonus of the Best Buy version a personal favorite. I love the entire CD from start to finish!

All I can say is that Rick Springfield has done it again! Both musically and lyrically - this album is edgy and very modern! I loaded the album onto my phone the day I got the CD and I haven't stopped listening to it yet! I've always been a fan of RS's autobiographical, story telling, writing style and this album is no exception. Because he writes with a focus on real-life issues - I've always found his music to be VERY relateable! Not many artists have been able to survive the music industry beyond a few good years - but that is absolutely not the case for Rick Springfield! This album is proof he still has something relevant to say and that he continues to do what he does for a genuine love of music. With so many manufactured "artists" in music today, it's refreshing to have an artist that actually writes and plays on his own songs. You can definitely tell the difference between someone that just wants to be famous or a star - versus someone who produces music because they love it. In my opinion - Rick Springfield is a true artist and this album is by far one of his best yet! Can't wait for his tour to start so I can hear this songs live! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ALBUM!
