About the author

Hi friends! My name is Lang Elliott and I am an author, speaker, cinematographer, sound recordist, and even an aspiring nature poet. I am interested in celebrating the wonder and beauty of nature, touching upon the miracle of existence, and understanding our role in the great mystery of it all.
To learn more about me and my passions, please visit langelliott.com, my personal website (be sure to sign up for my free newsletter and blog!). In addition, I have recently launched musicofnature.com, a friendly online store where I sell pure nature recordings for relaxation and personal enjoyment (available as digital downloads and CDs).
Lately, I've been dreaming up a new book project that will focus on nature aesthetics and appreciation. In addition, I'm planning to produce at least two nature-oriented movies. What's more, I've been writing a lot of nature poetry (the kind that actually rhymes!).
NOTE: The best way to keep track of my activities is via my blog at langelliott.com.

The quality of the written material, photographs, and the insect song recordings (on the provided audio CD), is EXCELLENT.
The authors have created a wonderful reference and read, it is quite engaging and informative.
This has become a favorite book on my shelf..
What worked for me in learning was to pick out one sound in the nightly din, try to pinpoint which sonograms matched, narrowing down by the range maps provided, then listening to the CD for the 2-3 candidates - and bingo! Then another and another. Then I could pick out these new friends as I went about my life in other towns and states - field or city. Then, as I traveled, would listen for "pockets" of new species I may not hear in my home town, looking at range maps ahead of time. Driving became a new adventure. And the fun is not just in being able to identify these creatures (and their interesting common names), it's the insights the book provides, so you know why and how the sounds are being made and understanding the drama unfolding around you, and in what meadow or wetland this might be happening - and on what branch tip or building.
But the best part of the book is the extremely clear and striking photography (helpful for ID), with the insects mostly appearing to acknowledge the camera, endowing these little critters with personality not usually seen in field guides. The authors obviously love their work.
I cannot rate this book/CD highly enough!!!
The only negative about this book is the cheap binding. A book this spectacular deserves a much more durable package.
