I have loved this artist for forty years. When I first hear Album III, I was immediately enchanted. This guy is a wizard with lyrics but also with magnificent melodies. He has it all, meaning, humor, pathos, irreverence, variety.
This group of ten songs with amazing guitar playing could be underrated but let me it is one of greatest in my opinion. A gritty commentary on human society and life's struggles. Then comes his "Got a Ukulele" to lift us all up with: "Kind sirs and gentle ladies, grab your ukulele's ! I suppose by now you know my song. And the next time that I do it, get down and get into it. I trust you all will sing and strum along"...
If you're a fan of Louden, don't miss this gem. Give it time and you'll see what I mean.

Editorial Reviews
His unique take on these hard times largely written by himself, mostly sad, some funny & even some optimistic.

Great music from Loudon Wainwright III.
The songs are deep and full of meaning.

I think I'd enjoy listening to this, but I can't get it to download to my desktop.
I followed the instructions, but the file won't download.
This used to work, when things were simpler.

What is there to say? I like all of the songs. They are all musical and have thoughtful, clever lyrics.

Loudon is my favorite songwriter in this genre and I am sorry for all those people who haven't discovered him

.
"Songwriting's not hard, it's well understood. Anyone can do it and everyone should." sang Loudon Wainwright ('Something For Nothing', 2003).
......that may well be easy for him to say! Now 63 years young and with over 40 years' worth of golden material behind him, Loudon just cannot stop writing wonderful songs which will by turns enchant, amuse, inform, amaze and occasionally depress you. The man is quite simply the greatest post-war American songwriter - and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's, Townes van Zandt's or Neil Young's coffee tables in my soccer boots and say that. In terms of consistent songwriting quality, insight and introspective honesty nobody comes close to Loudon.
This short collection, barely 30 minutes in total, has been available via download for a while but now gets a long-overdue CD launch. It is Loudon's second successive concept album following 2009's Grammy-winning tribute to Charlie Poole. The two projects are of course related because Poole was a victim of the original Great Depression and here is Loudon with his ten odes to the latest one. All Loudon's trademarks are here - the razor-sharp wit (tracks 1, 4, 7), the astute social commentary (3 and 5 - a cover), the intensely personal track (2) and the tribute to a hero (6 - superb). The stand-out track for me is the short but brilliant 'Fear Itself' which is vintage Loudon. Only at the end of the CD does the level tail off a bit, with the final two tracks being slightly below par. But overall - as per usual - the craft, attention to detail, vocal timing and beautifully precise guitar picking (for which he is hugely underrated) are all present and correct.
Let's hope there's still some gas left in the LW3 tank and at least a couple more great albums come along before he hangs up the guitar case. Try to catch this songwriting genius at one of his remaining 2010 US tour gigs. If you've not yet seen him live it could be a night that changes your musical life....

I love Loudoun, but why is this so expensive? For only 10 songs? 30 minutes? Can't afford this in this depression.

Like always Loudon sings and writes from his heart and soul and makes an album worth getting. Things shouldn't be put down because of price!

I yield to nobody in my love for Loudon and his clever, literate, witty songs, and oddly underrated singing, but this half-hour of ten once topical songs is a curate’s egg of mostly good, occasionally so-so, or tedious ditties, owing an obvious debt to Loudon’s admitted influence, sixties satirical songwriter Tom Lehrer {whom I too grew up listening to}. In fact, the track called Cash for Clunkers is the only one I’ve ever heard by LW3 that left me wanting less.
Well worth hearing, and worth getting if, like me, you’re one of Loud’s crowd, but if you’re a LW3 virgin, don’t start here.
