Editorial Reviews

Review

"Urban fatalism at its best with a lot of self-deprecating laughs along the way for anyone who's ever frequented any bar, not just dive bars and certainly not just in Houston. Kind of like reading Bukowski if Bukowski had bothered with punctuation." Amazon Reviews

"Songs from Richmond Avenue is a laugh a minute retelling of life in Houston, Texas from the viewpoint of young transplants. After spending 30 years on the outskirts of this enormous city, I was able to sympathize and 'see' all the snarls and misconfigurations of this fine novel. I would recommend to anyone feeling left out of their current social situation - it could certainly be worse. Michael Reed is an author I will watch." Bonnye Fry, GoodReads

About the Author

Michael Reed is an award-winning Texas journalist, which means he has lived in inexpensive apartments and driven paid-for used cars most of his life. Experience as a reporter and editor, along with extensive, though at the time completely unintended research into the many facets of Houston's dive bar scene, provided him with the requisite background material for this novel. This is the Southern Illinois University graduate's first novel.

I live in Houston, used to ride the bus all the time, and this book in no way represents any thing I know about Houston. Boring, jumbled book. Couldn't get past the first chapter. Oh and some society girl thinks she can ride the bus and show everybody? really?

A good debut novel by a professional journalist I had the good fortune to work with for a number of years. Yeah, that's my disclaimer, I do know Michael Reed, or Mike as I knew him back in the day. But as a former professional myself, I can be unbiased, and if I thought the book sucked (as did one misguided reviewer, who evidently mistook this book for some kind of Fodor's critique of the Houston bus system), I'd have no problem saying that. No, Michael has a flair for the descriptive paragraph, and having been in one or two seedy Richmond Avenue bars in my day, I can say with conviction that yes, you do indeed tend to run into some real characters there. And speaking of characters, Songs From Richmond Avenue has some unforgettable ones, and the book will take you for a pretty wild ride with them. The book made me smile and laugh a number of times. Buy it!
