I have been a long-time fan so am biased on some level. I bought this even though I have nearly everything on it. The reason for all the stars is simple - it is not just about her hits but about a fuller range of well-written and performed songs that didn't all get much airplay. I listened to this while wrapping Xmas gifts and it was just a solid effort and wonderful listening. "Older Sister" and "Hello Big Man" just go hand and hand with her new autobiography in showing personal touches to a very interesting life. This again is not a greatest hits effort and, while it has a number of her hits interspersed, it does point out that Carly is much more than the hits. Excellent collection for those wanting more insight into Carly Simon.

These songs go with the book, "Boys in the Trees" and are a well-chosen subset of Carly Simon's finest work. This, in combination with "Clouds in My Coffee" are the two must-have "greatest hits" compilations, and should induce the listener to buy the rest of this magnificent singer/songwriter's output. Some (if not all) of these have been remastered, and one can tell slight differences between these and the originals, with the instrumentation in "Songs From the Trees" standing out a bit better. "I'm All it Takes to Make You Happy" is an unreleased gem.

For the Carly Simon super fan, who wants to own everything that Simon has ever recorded, this 2 CD compilation is a must have as it includes one very hard to find track and two previously unreleased ones.

The hard to find track, "Winkin', Blinkin' and Nod", a duet with sister Lucy Simon, is from the 1965 album "The Simon Sisters". The 2 previously unreleased tracks are "Showdown", from the 1978 "Boys In The Trees" sessions and "I Can't Thank You Enough" a song co-written with son Ben Taylor.

This compilation also includes "I'm All It Takes To Make You Happy", until now only available in the 1995 3-disc compilation "Clouds In My Coffee".

All tracks have been remastered and the sound quality is excellent.

According to the linear notes, this "Songs From Trees" CD collection is a companion to Simon's book "Boys in the Trees: A Memoir". This CD set consists of 29 songs from 13 of Simon's albums plus the one track from the Simon Sisters album and the 2 unreleased tracks. However, you do not need the book to enjoy these songs.

Although “Songs from the Trees” can be considered a compilation, it must be said from the start that it’s not actually a greatest hits. The reason is quite simple : the album is meant as a companion to Carly’s fine autobiography (“Boys in the Trees”), a book which – quite unfortunately – doesn’t cover her life after divorcing James Taylor. This double album does include a generous handful of her early hits (“You’re So Vain”, “Anticipation”, “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be”, “The Right Thing to Do”, “You Belong to Me” and a few others), but it only covers her musical career up to 1983, the odd exception being 1987’s “Two Hot Girls (on a hot summer night)”. In spite of this (or maybe because of this), the concept is an interesting one, putting the emphasis on songs that resonate more closely with personal events of this part of Simon’s life. She’s also added a previously unreleased song (“Showdown”, a convincing leftover from the “Boys in the Trees” album sessions) and a fine brand new track, “I Can’t Thank You Enough”, alongside many deep album tracks, all of them just as fine as her better-known material – and sometimes even better ("We're So Close", a lost gem from 1979's "Spy" album, might be the best song she's ever written). If anything, “Songs from the Trees” eloquently demonstrates that Carly’s music was never just about the hits, and that she is first and foremost an album artist, one whose musical output far exceeded the standards associated to pop-rock music.

Still, this is an album obviously meant for her diehard fans; those looking for a more complete « greatest hits » type of collaboration would be better served with « Reflections » or, even better, with the two-CD « Anthology », both of which include all the hits (and, in the case of "Anthology", many key album tracks).
