Slow songs, some downbeat, mostly by cover bands. When Amazon was pushing this hard at the beginning of summer I put it on thinking I would get a good mix of various era's summer hits. You get that, but mostly not by the original artist. About halfway through the playlist, my wife AND my 10 year-old had enough and insisted I turn it off. It was worth one listen but not worth two, even for free.
I tried. I started listening with the idea that I would erase the originals from my mind and listen with open ears. Who knows, there might be something really good in here, a new artist to follow, a fun new version of an old favorite. No. Didn't happen. Who Are these people and why are we listening to them. Blah. This is one star music. The extra star is for giving me a really good playlist idea to put together with the original artists.
Can we say road trip music? This compilation has a little to annoy, surprise, and delight everyone. I think they could have done a little better on the order of the songs. There's a quite a distinct between the beginning and the end of the playlist. I think several of the reviews cast judgement before listening to the full compilation. I enjoy hearing new musicians put their spin on old music. Beats Antique made Cruel Summer their own. I like the immersion of traditional instruments with synth. The Last Day of Summer by Big Jesus was fantastic, love the blend of progressive and 90s grunge. It had a undertone of sorts which made me think of My Own Summer by the Deftones. I Will Be Crazy for You by Stephen Kellogg is just a happy go lucky backyard swimming pool song. Surfer Girl immediately gave me flashes of 50s teen movies and a '57 Chevy Bel Air Convertible. Don't Fight Fate has a 80s Synthpop sound which I really like. Photobooth is another Synthpop song. I like Synthpop because it was big in the 80s when I was kid. I similar new songs and they give me the feel I got hearing 80s synth songs for the first time. Listen for So Long by Dirty Heads, it's one catchy Reggae style tune. I pumped up the volume for Kindred Mountain High, it has a strong southern rock sound, breaking out my country roots. I love me some Harmonica. It's foot stomping good to the last beat. BBQ and coleslaw song if I've ever heard it. I vision a bunch of hippies dancing around swinging their arms like they're swimming to The Swimming Song.
What a wonderful product from Amazon -- hope the company produces a lot more! The collection takes "Summer" themed music from all genres, so there is something for everyone. I was going to give you my favorites so far, but I'm feeling like moving and groving to more than I care to list. With 46 songs to choose from, it is easy to skip over songs that don't appeal.
I love this sound track and listen to it often. I play it at work and at home through Alexa and even my family has fallen in love with it. I like some of the songs more than others but I really love the artists performing the songs. It's not the originals but they put a really good twist on the songs. They are very talented and the songs are very well done.
You have to be open to listening to the songs being performed by other artists other than the originals.
This playlist gets a pair of stars for the three songs that are worth a re-listen. Matt Nathanson's "Gold in the Summertime" is the best song of the bunch. Actually a really good song on its own. Then there's covers of "Walking on Sunshine," and "Island in the Sun." Decent stuff. Other than that there's nothing fun or memorable about this collection. Kind of a disappointment to be honest.
Wow, there are a whole lot of whiners on Amazon reviewing this set of songs. This is free to listen with Amazon Prime, and I was pleased that Amazon secured this list of "exclusive tracks and covers" as a special treat to welcome the summer months.
I admit, these covers of mostly well known songs are not as good as some of the originals. I also admit that music can be reviewed subjectively by each person. The issue I really have with such negative reviews is that this list of songs was promoted as exclusive to Amazon Prime (eliminating the possibility of it being the original versions). I don't mind the type of re-recordings that are found here, and I am a little tired of the originals because I have heard them so many times.
One negative review did comment on the diversity of the artists and songs that were covered. I don't feel strongly about the point there is some diversity in the list), but I understand and would have liked some songs from more diverse genres. Otherwise, I want to thank Amazon for the effort that was made to provide something new and fun for Prime customers with no additional charge. . . they didn't have to do this).
