The book is full of outdated information. I sent my material to several companies listed in this book. Within 2 1/2 weeks, I have already had 3 of my packages sent back to me as there was not a correct address or the person listed in the contacts was no longer there, etc. What a waste of time and money. I worked so hard on these packages. What a waste. I want to cry!
I did receive a response from one of the publishers. They were very excited about my submission and asked that I pay $200.00 to be signed to their company. This would of course cover administrative costs of "allowing" me to be a part of their company. Scam Central!
I have several more companies to hear back from, as I just sent the packages out recently. I look forward to hearing back from some of the legitimate companies that I sent material to. I just have to believe that they are not ALL like this!!
Save your money, buy a ticket to Nashville, make appointments with real people. I will never waste my money and false hopes on this junk again.
I suggest, anyone wanting to have their songs heard by these people, is to read the book carefully and thoroughly before you attempt to contact someone. Also make sure your songs are the best they can be. That is to say, know something about song form. AABA, AAAB, ABAB etc. It is not necessary that you be a professional musician, only that you have a song well written and commercially oriented. That means, make sure you know the market you are pitching your songs in. Moreover, elaborate demos are fine but often not necessary. One can sometimes catch a producer's attention with a vocal and guitar demo alone.
As for me, I write music, and have songwriting software, so putting a song together is not much of a problem anymore as it was during the 1970s and 1980s when I was in my twenties and thirties respectively. The 2011 edition is still somewhat current, but it would probably be best if you got the most up-to-date edition of the Songwriter's Market currently offered.
These books are for anyone, including nonprofessionals, who are really serious about finding a record producer to hear their songs, so that they can try an match them with a top artist, or one on their way up the ladder of success.Read more ›
The info contained in this book has been priceless. It's very straightforward as to what to expect as a songwriter.
I've contacted some of the publishers and record companies in the book, and they've been very excited about my material.
So, whether anything comes of it for me or not, this book was the gateway to at least giving "the dream" a shot.
I would reccomend that any aspiring songwriter pick this book up and read it VERY closely, several times.
