I'm a professional songwriter who's had writers block from time to time, but it's not possible to have writers block if I pick up the book and JUST DO IT. It's a book you really can't just read anyway. The author forces you to let go and enjoy yourself while writing songs that are powerful and coherent. When you just look at the book you think, what are all these illustrations and quotes about?...but then you realize they're just fuel to get you going, and THEY REALLY GET YOU GOING.
You can buy all the technical books out there that analyze hit songs, asking you to write verse/chorus etc. etc..., all the rules and regulations, but songwriting isn't just a cerebral activity. Personally, I've been shut down by a lot of those books. This one opened me up and made songwriting a joyful, exhilarating experience again. Buy it and get extra copies for your songwriting collaborators. Use it to generate ideas with your partner - even, and especially if your collaborator has been reluctant to use any kind of instruction book before. This one is special, and I'll go out on a limb and say it's the most original book on songwriting I've found yet.
When I opened it up I was a little miffed. Most of the pages of this relatively large book had very few words on them, and many of them included silly line drawings of random things. But I read through the introduction and got right into the "Week One" exercises. Before I knew it I had a brand new song written. Next day, I did Week Two exercises and bam! Cranked out another tune.
I'm legitimately amazed at how these exercises loosened up my creative flow. I knew that's what I needed, but I didn't know someone could actually put that down into a book and have it come across so well to a lone reader. Also, she seems to offer a lot of helpful tips for not just creating new songs out of thin air, but for listening to songs you may already have in the works and finishing them, rewriting, adding to, etc.
Bottom line: stoked on this book and what it has inspired in my songwriting. Can't wait to explore it more.
