Sonia Korn Grimani tells a true story that vividly brings to life what it felt like to be a child during the holocaust - the fear, anger, rejection, loss, hunger, heartbreak and courage - the special courage of children. This is a story of a mother's love, sibblings who look out for each other, fathers who get lost, and all the other horrors that came with World War II. Mostly, it is a story of a family that survived, and eventually thrived and flourished after WWII. The truth of this story is horrifying but it is also uplifting in the small moments of kindness, the devotion this family had for each other, and ultimately the courage, intelligence and perseverance they used to survive. I highly recommend this book to teenagers and adults alike.

Sonia was a German Jew and knew from a very young age that Hilter's world in Germany in the 1930's and 1940's was a dangerous world to live in. She grew up in fear of her life from her earliest memories. Her story of survival is well written and contains enough historical facts to make the story move smoothly along. Although the orphanage protected her, she definitely did not get the warmth and support she needed for her age and circumstance.

She does talk about her life after the war and brings you up to date to the 2000's.

I finished her book in a day, as I was so wrapped up in story.

She was sent to an orphanage to live when the family was no longer able to stay together. Along with her brother, they endure hardships there, due to an extremely evil women. At the end or her book she says, concerning this woman, she was honorable for saving 20 children's lives. See what you think.

What I liked about this the most is that it is a different take on what happened to Jews in Europe after Hitler took power: Sonia did not end up in a concentration camp. Her story is therefore much easier to read than the horrific tales of those that were interred. However, her fear, sadness, and compassion are self evident. I found it an easy read, with a good story line, and I'd recommend it to others.
