Like most analog clocks, the alarm is set by turning a small knob on the back; that positions a small yellow hand into place on the face. This is really simple and it's obvious that you have the right alarm time chosen (no fears of choosing PM instead of AM on a digital alarm, for example). The backlight can be set to high-low-off, and it's very bright. Adjustments for the volume/tone/alarm are around the sides.
When this clock goes off, it is pretty shocking. Flashing lights, vibrating rumbler, and a loud beeping. Hitting the snooze button gives you 4 minutes of relief, but you have to move the alarm options switch to "off" to stop it. If you are a light sleeper or in the middle of some dream when this alarm activates, it could probably scare you pretty good---think of waking up to your blaring house security alarm, or the carbon monoxide detectors, etc. Of course, people who want this type of clock are sleeping like the dead so they need all the noise, light, and shaking.
I do wish the volume and tone adjustment wheels had some kind of markings to tell where they're set. And it would be preferable to have a separate "alarm on/off" button so the selection for vibrate/tone options could be permanently set.
One last thing to consider would be how a bed partner, roommate, or even wall-sharing neighbors may react to this clock. People living below, above, and next to your bedroom will probably hear this alarm and even the rumbler (depending on how you place it). I absolutely can hear these clocks going off a good distance and a floor away in my own house.
But the sad side effect is that I cannot hear my alarm go off. I had to get the super noise cancelling earplugs and even though my alarm is inches away from my head I kept sleeping through it.
The combo of vibration plus the extremely loud bass noise of this alarm is able to wake me up every time.
I really like how easy it is to set this, it has just a tiny dial on the back, no more running through the numbers trying to get back to zero, gawd, that happened to me every fricking time! Also, the light at the top helps me set it in the dark since I always forget to set it before I get into bed.
I really really love this alarm, it is worth every penny.
I have just one complaint and that is the power cord it is super thin and probably not interchangeable, my cat is addicted to power cords and I'm worried that someday she will bite it in half and I'll have to pay dearly for a replacement cord.
I do like that this is very easy to set the time and the alarm by just twisting the knobs on the back. Very simple. It is also very simple to accidentally reset the time by turning the wrong knob since the knobs are located less than an inch from each other. I would like to see maybe a push/pull button to set the time and lock it so that one doesn't inadvertently reset the time when reaching around the back of the clock to set the alarm.
The best thing about this clock is the option to wake to flashing lights and tone or shaker or a combo of all of the above. The shaker alone will knock your socks off! I leave the shaker on my bed table because I have cats that sleep on my bed and tend to want to play with the cords.
It has a very broad adjustable tone (very low to very high pitch) which is great for people who may have varying degrees of hearing loss.
It has a battery for backup BUT the battery only preserves the time. The alarm functions will not work if electrical power is lost. I live in a more rural community and we do lose power frequently so this is a problem for me.
There are only two settings for brightness and the dimmest setting is a very bright, almost neon blue. There is also an off switch for the backlight, but once it's off, it's completely dark and you can't see the time at all.
I will probably return this for the digital version because the backlight is way too bright, the alarm does not function on the backup battery, and the inability to lock the time once it's set.
However, if you want a clock that will wake you up, this is the clock. Besides an ear piercing alarm, a bed shaker, and flashing lights, they hide the alarm off button so you must be wide awake to find it and turn the alarm off. The snooze button is easy to find, but that only gets you 5 minutes more sheep.
I do wish they had hidden the alarm volume and tone adjustment better. We had to put tape over both to prevent accidentally changing the volume or tone when groping for the off switch in the dark.
One really nice feature about this clock is that it doubles as a nightlight. My mom loves that about it.
