it feels like an SATA drive instead of a USB drive when ...

Today I installed the Sonnet Allegro Pro card in my cMP 5,1. The card is well made and fits tightly in its slot. This card requires no additional power connection, and driver support is built into OS X 10.8.5 or greater.

My current configuration is arranged as follows:
Slot 1 – AMD HD 7970 3GB by MVC
Slot 2 – Apple/Samsung 512GB PCIe SSD using v.1 Sintech Adaptor
Slot 3 – Sonnet Allegro Pro USB 3.0
Slot 4 – Apricorn Solo X2 w/Samsung 840 Pro SSD

After trying every USB device type that I own (Many drives (up to 4TB), webcam, USB Thumb drives, Mouse/Mice, Keyboards (4), printers, scanner, drive docking station, and USB hubs). I found no compatibility or performance issues. I transferred 16TB of data in 4TB chunks in each direction and found no issues at all. I also transferred 4TB of data in small files (again in each direction) and the process was flawless. So far I’m impressed.

About the Allegro Pro:
This card has 4 independent controllers (one for each port) and each is totally isolated from the others. The system profiler shows 4 different x1 devices installed into a single slot, it is not reported as an x4 device.

This card supports UASP and that is a specification I now demand on any USB card or storage device (except thumb drives) connected to my system. UASP is intended to speed up operations of USB connected SSDs, but I find it also brings enhanced performance to mechanical drives that are installed in UASP compatible enclosures. UASP allows you to perform tasks related to the drive (renaming or moving folders for example), while a file transfer from the same drive is in progress. It does this without slowing the transfer or being forced to wait for an operation to be completed. In other words, it feels like an SATA drive instead of a USB drive when working.

Summary:
I my opinion, this is an exceptional card, that is slightly slower than the RocketU 1144C with similar specs. This card has additional features for charging devices such as iPhone, iPod, iPad etc… The Sonnet website recommends that you download a driver for charging support. I haven’t personally tested this, but I've been told by another user that this driver isn’t needed. It’s sole purpose is to avoid the pop-up notification (Drive was improperly ejected) on receives when waking the computer from sleep with USB drives attached. With this card so far (unlike any other card I’ve tested), if you eject the drives manually before sleeping the computer, you won’t get the pop-up notification when the computer wakes and remounts the attached USB drives.

Since I’ve only owned the card for a short period of time, this will be a rolling review until I feel it’s complete.

Conclusion:
I really like this card but it's a bit pricy at $129 from most retailers. When price and speed are the deciding factors, the RocketU-1144C wins. That said, I feel this is a great choice for the long haul with it's 5 year warranty, and device charging capabilities. I noticed that when I plug devices into this card (especially large drives), the devices are recognized and/or mounted much quicker than with the RocketU. I plan to keep this card installed for a while for further testing.

I whole heartedly recommend this card for heavy duty lifting. If your needs are less or if you are $ wise, look at the RocketU-1144C or the Sonnet Allegro (non-pro version). This is a very nice addition to my cMP (at least until I start testing USB 3.1 cards).

NOTE: The card pictured below is a stock photo of the v.1 card. The card that ships now has a rather large heatsink located on the large chip in the center of the board.

On the MacPro 1,1, MacOSX installation flawless; Win7 installation was a little bob-and-weave.

I bought this card for the dedicated speed to each lane, and of course for its known compatibility in the MacPro.

It works for me in the MacPro 1,1. I ran both a thumb drive and an external hard drive at full USB 3.0 speeds through the card in both Windows 7 and MacOS.

The physical installation of the card was smooth; it fit effortlessly in its slot. To get the full speed potential of this drive, especially in slower systems like mine, make sure it is installed in the top or second-from-top PCIe slot. You can configure the speed in MacOSX to make sure both it and your video card have their best throughput. I cannot figure out how to do the analogous configuration in Win7 yet.

The driver was automatically installed under Yosemite; no effort on my part. However, the Win 7 driver installation was a bit more finicky. I needed to download a driver from another company altogether (that the Sonnet website sent me to), as Win7 did not have native drivers for this device, and the installation failed when win7 auto-detected it. For a little while, there was considerable overscanning of my desktop on my HDTV (the outside 1/5th of my desktop was off the screen) after I installed the above driver; maybe windows or the new driver stole some PCIe throughput from my video card to power the card? Thankfully, I use an old LCD 15" monitor as a secondary so I can see the Mac boot screen; the VGA connection was not overscanned, and I temporarily used that as my primary monitor. My desktop on the HDTV corrected itself after I tinkered with it, but I do not think any of my tinkering really did anything.

Aside from the hassle with Windows 7, I am satisfied with this card.

Outstanding

I got this as a replacement for the Inateck KT4004 for my cMP 5,1 2012 edition. The card installs tight and has a solid fit. While the KT4004 works well, the USB3-PRO-4PM-E leaves the performance of the Inateck in the dust (as well it should at 4 times the price). First the Inateck has only a single USB controller to share across 4 ports. That means if you use multiple drives on the card their performance will all degrade as IO processing is against each of the drives simultaneously. The Sonnet USB3-PRO-4PM-E has a separate USB 3 controller per port. My initial tests show there is no degradation of performance when I'm running IO benchmark tests across multiple drives plugged it at the same time. Yea the USB3-PRO-4PM-E is a lot of money.. but if you need a solid card with solid performance it's worth every penny.

Installation is Easy. Works with the Mid-2012 Mac Pro

I received this card yesterday (7/14/17) to replace the Sonnet Allegro USB 3.0 PCIe card I’ve had installed in my Mid-2012 Mac Pro for some time. As with the non-pro version of this card, it was fairly easy to install and it just works. I did not have to install any software or drivers to make it do so. I run MacOS Sierra 10.12.5. Each USB 3.0 slot shows up as its own connection in system profiler, rather than as a single connection with four slots under it as the non-pro version did. I have several hard drive docks plugged into it, and they all appear to be stable. I can’t say that I have seen much of a difference in copying speeds, as the previous card was fairly fast on its own.

Buy this for room scale oculus rift

If you are trying to configure a 3-4 camera oculus rift room scale setup, don't putz around just buy this. It seems to work fine with the cable matters passive cables at 6' and 10' and works fine with the hde 3.0 16' active cables, while running all 4 cameras with just this card. I run the headset and all my peripherals from the z170 usb 3.0. This card uses supported fresco logic controllers, 1 per port and shows up as 4 seperate controllers/root hubs in device manager so each port has full bandwidth so the cameras don't have any issues. I am currently running the card through the pch and it seems to work fine as there should be enough bandwidth on dmi 3.0 to allow this. On dmi 2.0 you may need to socket it in an sli slot that has pci lanes directly attached to the cpu?
